Aileged Assault. A man named Jones will be brought up at the Kesidenfc Magistrate's Court, Geraldine, this morning, charged with assiulting his wife.

Public Meeting. Mr. Henry Gooday convenes a public meeting on Friday evening next in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, "to take into consideration the preterit condition of the working men in the district.' Pbusonal.—Mr C. J. Cooke, master of the Hilton School, ha? been appointed master of the Avrahuri School, in the Wanganui district. Mr Cooke will carry with him the good wishes of a large circle of friends on his departure from Hilton. Pablilamentart Union.—A meeting «f those interested in the formation of a Parliamentary Union in Temuka takes place this eveniug, in the Mechanics' Institute Reading Ronm. We hope to see a good attendance. Non-members of the Institute are invited to be present.

Rating Notiob.—ln another column the Geraidine Road Board notify that tbey intend at their next meeting to strike a rate of one half-penny in the £, on all rateable property in the Geraidine Road District, for the p»riod ending March 31st, 1886. Resident Magistrate's Court, Geraldine —Mr Baddeley, R.M., came down fiom Christchurch yesterday, to hold the UHual fortnightly sitting of this Court. There was, however, no business brought before him, consequently this is the. second time within fortnight Mr Baddeley has come to Geraldiae on a fruitless errand. Masonic—The installation of officers in the Winchester Lodge, No. 1737, E.G., take* plise to-niorrow evening in the Lodge room, Wmobester, at half-past seven. Visiting brethren aro cordially invited to attend. The installation of officers of Lodge Southern Star, No. 619, S.C., Geruldine, will tako place in the Lodge Room on Thursday next ah 7.30 p.m. The Rev. Jas. Accidents.—On Saturday a man named Morgan, whibfc assisting to raise the elevators of a machine which was working on the Marchwiel Estate (Luxmore's), nearTimaru, had his right leg broken by the elevators falling on him. He was taken to the hospital.—The same day, on the wharf, limaru, one of the tally clerks (Mr A. Pollock) in the employ of the Railway Department was engaged in his work, when a slip filled with goods knocked him out of the railwav truck in which he was standing on to the rails. He was very badly bruised, and had to be conveyed home, where Dr Hogg attended to him.—Mr T. B. Sheen, of Tcmuka, met with an accident on Friday night. He was going to his shop, when he tripped and fell, and his face came against a stump in a gorse fence. The result was a nasty cut on the inside of his cheek, and as it bled very profusely he proceeded to Dr Hayes, who found that an artery had been cut. Dr Hayes quickly attended to the wound, and Mr Sheen is now little the worse for his misadventure.

Dreadful Tragedy. Nbab Oamabtj.News reached Oamaru yesterduy of a dreadful tragedy at Herbert, last Sunday night. A storekeeper nameJ Henry White, 21 yean of age, shot dead Ada Patterson, aged 11 years, a daughter of the local publican, and afterwards committed suioide by blowing out his brains. The affair ocourred in Patterson'i Hotel, where both bodies now lie waiting an inquest.

Oddfellows' Lodge.—A meeting of the Geraldine Lodge of Oddfellows was held last Friday evening, at which there was an attendance of about 30 members. The following officers were elected : Bro. J. Pye, N.G.; Bro. Grimmer, V.G.; Bro. Coltman, Secretary ; Bro. Williams, Treasurer. Tenders for the proposed additions to the hall were opened, but on it being made known that the Geraldine Volunteers contemplated building a hall of I heir own (100 ft long by 50ft wide), it was decided to defer the acceptance of any tender for a fortnight. The night of meeting was changed from Friday to every alternate Wednesday. Barker, Kynnei-sley, Temuka, has extended the time for receiving tenders for his land till the 27th inst., having decided on this course in consequence of no tenders hating been sent in for some of it.
