TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the 'Jimaru Harbor Board took place last Th ursday. Present—Mr Moody (Chairman), Captain Sutter, M.H.R., and Messrs John Talbot, E. Elworthy, J. Kelland, A. Hayes, A. Wilson, E. Acton, K. F. Gray, and M. Jonas. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the Chairman said that the revenue for the month from all sources had been £547 18s 3d. Prom tiie Traffic Manager of th" New Zealand railways, stating that the wharf was not sufficiently well lighted to allow of the Department working vessels at, night, and suggesting that the number of lights be doubled.—The Secretary stated that it would be very difficult to place more lights on the wharves so that they would be out of the way of the cranes, and suggested (list fl irr-np lights should be used.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

The Chairman stated that he had obtained the sanction of the Railway Department for the use of the Board’s dredger crane to work vessels at the wharf, and it had performed excellent work. He had written to the Department in consequence of the complaints of shippers re the despatch given to vessels owing to the insufficient cranage power on the wharf. Tiie Captain of the barque Kassa, and Mr 0. W. Turner, wrote at length, complaining of the delay caused to vessels at the port, and Messrs Bruce and Co. wrote, claiming £3 for demurrage and cost of shifting certain goods.—The matter was referred to the Standing Committee to report on. The Harbor Master reported the arrival of 27 vessels, and the departure of 25, during the month of May. The Landing Service bad been employed to partly work several vessels during the month, the gross earnings being £24.9 16s 6d, and the nett £ll6 16s 2d. Qe attached a table showing the cost of the dredging with the Titan, It showed that to dredge 35 tons coat £ll 16s.—The Board decided that this was too expensive, and that no more should he done.

Captain Sutter said the silt thrown behind the T wharf simply spread over the harbor, and probably was lifted again and again. He moved—“ That the Standing Committee enquire whether some other place cannot be found to deposit the silt dredged in the harbor.” —Carried.

The Clerk of the Works reported that during the month three lengths of monolith bad been finished, making a total length completed of this coot) act (No. 5) of 334 ft, viz., the whole of the curve, 319 ft, and 25ft oh the new straight line. There had been also foundation blocks laid a further distance of 36ft. The greater portion of the new wheels for the crane “ Sampson ” had arrived, A quantity of ironbark piles and beams for the Moody wharf had arrived, but many of the piles were condemned, and of this the contractor had been notified. He asked for authority to order from England ten wheels and pinions cast in steel, aa spare requisites for the Board’s cranes, —The Board granted the necessary authority. In accordance with a recommendation from the Secretary, it was resolved to raise the cadet’s salary to £6O per annum. In accordance with a resolution passed at last meeting, that the Standing Committee be requested to bring up a report on what extensions, if any, in their opinion is required of the present Breakwater and Moody Jetty, so as to enable large steamers and ships to load and discharge in safety alongside one or the other, with the cost of the same,’ the following was handed in ; side the Breakwater be extended 100 ft ; that the Moody Jetty be extended 300 f t; that the mole be extended 330 ft, and that a berth be dredged for Home steamers drawing about 2Cft; estimate of cost of all works, say, £50,000.” —After a discussion, the matter was adjourned. Captain Sutter then moved—“ That no more concrete blocks be made than will complete the 500 ft. of work now in course of construction.”—The motion was lost by five to three. After passing accounts amounting to £3611 2s Id, the Board rose.
