A man named Joseph Brennan, was sentenced to two months imprisonment at the Police Court, Timaru, yesterday, he having been found illegally in the Roman Catholic Presbytery, at 2.30. a.m. on that date. The wife of a fanner at Fairlie Creek, .named Hennessy, committed suicide on Friday last by cutting her throat. The unfortunate woman was only 25 years of age, and no cause has been assigned for the act. A man named Herbert Hawke was drowned while crossing the Waiohine river, between Greytown and ’Mataura (Wellington). He was driving a horse and cart across the river about 9 o’clock on Saturday night, when he was swept away. The horse was found dead on Sunday, with the cart attached, Hawke leaves a wife and four children. A young Maori, Tutara, was charged at Wanganui on Saturday with assaulting a Maori woman with intent to commit rape. The charge was dismissed, it being proved that the complainant was drunk. As her evidence was not corroborated, the Magistrate thought it would be establishing a dangerous precedent to send the case to a jury. A thunder squall passed over Whangarer Heads on Wednesday. Mr Hannah, a surveyor, and two men at the Trig Station, on Bream Head, were struck by lightning, which went through their coat sleeves and down the leg of one of the men, who was badly burnt on the hands. All lay insensible for some time, but have recovered. Their escape with their lives they regard as wonderful. The man Davidson, who attempted suicide by blowing himself up with gunpowder at Auckland on Thursday, died at the hoapital on Friday. Dr Trimmell and Mr Rudd, of the Government Insurance Department, happened to be passing at the time, and attended to the injured man, and Dr Singleton was sent for later, but the sufferer sank under his injuries and died on Friday evening. An inquest was held, when a verdict of accidental death was returned.
