HOUSE OP REPRESENTATITJB. In the House on Friday last, Mr G. F. Richardson gays notice to move on Wednesday next that the Hoaae go into Committee on Thursday to consider an Address to His Excellency the Governor, stating that in the opinion of this House it is undesirable for further grants to be made under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, but in lieu thereof that the property tax be levied to the extant of |d in the £, and the half of the property tax not being required for General Govern ment purposes, be handed over to the County Councils for expenditure on local works, the basis of distribution to be pro rata on the rateable value of the said counties. On the application 'of the" Hon. Mr Richardson, a week’s extension .of time was granted to the North Island Railway Committee to bring up its report. Replying to Mr G. F. Richardson, the Hon. Mr Richardson said the Government would consider the advisability of substituting payment by stamps for railway charges, but he did not think the change would ensure any good purpose. • Replying to Dr Newman; the : Hon. Mr Richardson said offers for the manufacture of railway locomotives in the colony would be invited. A number of Bills were introduced and read a first time. The Anatomy Act, the employment of Females and Others Act Amendment Bill, the School Committees Election Bill (Mr Steward) the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1881 Amendment Bill, and the Ohinemutu Goldfields’ Revenue Bill, were read a second time. A number of Bills were passed through Committee, and the House rose. .
