John Pitt, a gnm digger, was found drowned off the Helensville wharf (Auckland), on Monday afternoon. He was drunk on Sunday, and fell off the cutter Warkworth that night, but was fished out. He must have slipped off the deck again on Vlonday night. , The body of .a man named Daniel Lid die, an engineer, was picked up in Wellington harbour on Sunday. John MeLearv, machinist at the Nelson Evening Star Office, has been arrested on a charge of arson. On Friday night, an old unoccupied house near the railway station was discovered to be on fire, but p;&3, extinguish- d by a few buckets of water. Last Sunday night a light was discovered in the house and the neighbours sent for a constable, and then eff'cied an entrance by the window. It was found that a hide had been cm in the scrim, iand a candle .placed therein, sur- . rounded by hay over which kerosene had -been poured. A bottle containing about a pint of; kerosene had been left close to the candle. The hay was just . igniting, when discovered. Accused was remanded. Bail was refused. William-Ward was fined at the Auckland Police Court, on Tuesday, 20« and costs for creating a disturbance in the Salvation Army Birrack*. In future persona offending are to be bound over to keep the peace, the Mayor stating the “barracks” was the Salvationists’ castle and must be protected. s A labouring man named John ‘Carson was found dead on the banka of the Clutha below Beaumont (Otago). There is no clue to the cause of his death. One day last week a rsbhiter on Smith’s run, at Greenfield (Otago), was savagely attacked by his puck of dogs. One of the does started the attack, but ho succeeded in keeping the animal off, but it was soon joined by the whole pack. The man placed his hack to a fence, and in that position defended himself as well as he could, and be bad killed four of the dogs with his knife when assists: ce arrived, and he was rescued. ’• The mno can only attiibute the attack to the fact that, he was carrying sheepskins the previous day, and the scent may have attracted the brutes. The body of Ophelia Simpson a housekeeper, has been found in'a pond at North East Valley, Dunedin, with her throat cut in three places. two brothers had previously committed •aioicta.
