THE GERALDINE DAIRY FACTORY.

The building for the Geraldine Dairy Factory Company (Limited) is now completed, and was formally taken possession of from the hands of the trustees of the contractor on Tuesday afternoon last. Ihe building is after a design furnished by Mr C. Julius Toxward, architect for the New Zealand Government, and is of bluestone, from | a quarry near at hand, on concrete foundations. The necessary drawings, specifications, etc.,. are the work of Mr Annand, of Timaru. The walls throughout the exterior are 18 inches in thickness, with 9 -inch brick partitions inside, the total length being 52 feet by 44 feet in width. The back of the factory iB toward the road. The receiving stage at the back is built of solid material with a concrete floor, which is rii«*d to about the height of the bottom uf an ordinary milk cart. The cans are then conveyed through an opening into the milk room to the vats. This room is 20 feet in length by 18 feet in width ; the press room is 20 feet by 15 feet ; washing room, 15 feet by 10 feet 3 inches ; cheese room, 38 feet 9 inches by 20 feet 2 inches, and the engine room 20 feet by 10 feet. There U also a small office inside the building, 10 feet 3 inches by 9 feet. The average height of the walls is 13 feet, but the milk and cheese rooms are 18 feet in height, The interior of the walls is whitewashed throughout, 'ihe ventilation is on the most approved principle, Tobin's ventilators being used. The flooring, with the exception of the cheese room, is of concrete, that of the latter is of wood. Hot air pipes, connected with the engine are placed in the heating chamber under the flooring. There are five apertures, funnel shaped, three for hot air and two for cold air, in the wall leading under the floor of the cheese room. These apertures can be opened or closed at will, in accordance with the temperature required in the cheese room above, the heated or cold air passiHg into the room through small iron gratings inserted in the flooring. Hot and cold water pipes are laid throughout the building under the concrete flooring. The cheese room will be fitted up with revolving shelves. A.ll the machinery in connection with the working of the factory is now to hand, and will be fitted up in the building with as little delay as possible, and ere long we may exppct to hear of the establishment commencing work. Ihe Company are to be congratulated on possessing such a substantial building, which has been erected in a very workmanlike manner by Mr R, B. Siblpy, of Timaru, and lately, under instruction? from Messrs Maclean and Stewart, his trustees. Mr Radford has faithfully fulfilled his office of trust, that ot Clerk of the Works, the whele of the contract giving the greatest satisfaction to the Directors of the Company. The carpentry work was sub-let to Mr Henderßon, of Timaru, and the plumbing to Mr W. Fuming, of Geraldine. The manager's house will shortly bo commenced, the contract for same having been let to Mr Henderson.
