The French Press disavows any intention of anexing the New Hebrides.

Sir Vernon Harcourt has asked Marquis Tsmg to submit fresh proposals with regard to the Chinese difficulty. The French tone on the subject is moderating, but Marquis Tsing has, in an interview, intimated that it will be regarded as a declaration of war if the French attempt to reinforce while the parleying is going on. News from Hong Kong on Saturday states that the garrisons to the north have been reinforced, and that the Government has depleted the banks. Chatham Dockyard is busy preparing and despatching reinforcements to the fleet in Chinese waters, and a German squadron has been ordered to ciuise in those parts to reassure the German residents. Hanlon has challenged Laycock to a match for £2OOO, to be rowed on the Thamefe. Sept. 10. Accounts to hand from the hop districts are somewhat unsatisfactory, the crops having suffered considerable damage from the recent heavy gales. Telegrams to hand from Switzerland state that the Misses Booth, daughters of'General' Booth, of the Salvation Arrpy, have been expelled from Carlesworth (sic). The Marquis Tsing, the Chinese Envoy, has returned to London from Paris, where he has been negotiating with M. Challemel Lacour, the French Minister of War, for an amicable settlement of the Franco-Chinese difficulty. »

The efforts being made in Bulgaria to Russianise the people in defiance of the wishes of Prince Alexander are like to cause some strain in the relations between Russia and Germany, Vienna, Sept. 8,

According to the latest reports from the Southern Provinces the disaffected feeling of the &lav inhabitants has not diminished in any degree since the reinforcements of the troops was effected. Disloyalty to the Government is openly expressed, and rioting occurred at several places in Croatia. At Agram, the capital of the province, encounters,, have taken place between the military and bands of peasants, who fought with determination, several lives being lost and a large number of persons severely injured. It is announced that M, Patenotre has been appointed to succeed M. Tricon as French Minister in China. Capetown, Sept. 10. Intelligence has been received from Natal that Dabulnazi, a prominent Zulu chief, and one of the leaders in the recent hostilities', has been arrested at Greyto in Natal. ♦ AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Brisbane, Sept. 11. Two more cases ot smallpox occurred at the quarantine station among the passengers by the immigrant steamship Duke of Westminster, which recently arrived here from London.,
