ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH CONCERT TEMUKA.

. The concert in aid of the funds of the above church took place last . Tuesday evening in the Volunteer Hall, Teinuka, and was a great success from . every pointof view. The attendance was ' very large, and the singing was capital. Tlie hall was well filled, there not being room for half of those who had taken front seat tickets. Among those presen t

were people from Timam, Winchester, Pleasant Point, Geraldine, and all the intermediate districts. Shortly after 8 o’clock the Rev, Mr Hamilton advanced to the front of the stage, and explained the object for which the concert was held. He also intimated that the pianoforte duets on the programme would not be given, owing to the illness of one of the Misses, Fish of Geraldine. The concert was then opened by the Temuka Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. H. Edmonds, playing selections from the opera of the * Pirates of Penzance ’ in a capital manner, and this was followed by a chorus of Druids from ‘Norma,’in which ten gentlemen took part, under the conductorship of Mr Rutland, Mr Foster, of Timaru,sang ‘ The Gauntlet,’ and at a subsequent period, 4 I Fear no Foe.’ He was in excellent form and sang splendidly. Mrs Edmonds was heard to great advantage in the song ‘At the Ferry,’ and was loudly applauded. Next was sung the glee ‘ What Shall He Have that Killed the Deer ’ by Messrs Bell, Pilbrow, Rutland and Edmonds with great effect, and Miss Innes, ofTiraanqsang ‘ Excelsior ’ in a manner that woa her great applause. She also sang ‘ The Wishing Cap ’ capitally. Mrs Deßenzie sang 1 Too Late ’ and 4 Come Back to Erin ’ very well, and Mr Edmonds ‘ The Death of Nelson’ with his usual ability. Mrs Rout was received with storms of applause, and sang 4 Thou Art so Near and Yet so Far ’ in a manner that elicited an encore, to which she responded by singing 1 Killarney.’ She also sang ‘ True to the Last,’ and 4 We’rd Batter Bide a we« ’ as an encore to it, subsequently. Mr Wilkinson sang four comic songs which created quite a fuiore and relieved the monotony of the performance, and a chorus of ten gentlemen sung one of Mendelssohn’s part songs splendid ly. Miss Barabridge sang 4 There is a Flower that Bloometh ’ but she was suffering from the effects of a severe cold and was not up to her usual excellence. The Rev Mr Hamilton sang ‘Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep ’ and Miss Rutland ‘Ring On Sweet Angelus’ with good effect, and both were loudly applauded. Mr Aspinall sang ‘The Gallants of England ’ very well, the whole company sang one of Mendelssohs pait songs, Miss Brown 4 Twickenhan Ferry,’ and 3 the glee of 4 The Three Chafers ’by a number of gentlemen, a delightful piece of music, brought the programme to a close. Mr Pearpoint then moved a vote of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who had taken part in the entertainment, which was carried by acclamation, after which all joined in singing ‘God Save the Queen.’
