MATAU SCHOOL YEAR

SATISFACTION AT BREAKING-UP. DISTRICT PERSONAL ITEMS. Despite the inclement weather the annual breaking-up ceremony of the Matau school on Thursday was well attended. The event was organised by the Women’s Division. There were lollies and fruit and presents for all. A popular feature was a lucky bran tub, the contents of which were bought from the proceeds of a Christmas cake competition. The cake was given by Mrs. W. McCoard. This competition was won by Miss Thelma McCoard. The following short programme was given by the school children: Song, primers;, “The Lost Boy,” play reading, the standards; song, standards; “Rabbits," play reading, standards; song, all children; fancy dance, six children. Mr. W. Rawlinson, chairman of the school committee, presented the following prizes:— ■■ ■ ' ' Standard 6: Bruce Rawlinson and Norman Smith. Standard 5: Alex. Rolfe. Standard 4: Avis McCoard. Standard 3: Charlie Eriksen and Dudley Smith. Standard 2: Gordon Rawlinson , and Gwittha McCoard. Primers: Mildred Moody, Elva Chapman, Thelma McCoard, Melville. Smith. Other primers: Gwen and Dawn Mumby, Lionel Chapman, Muriel Wolfsbauer and Nola f McCoard. Attendance certificate: Thelma McCoard. Best crop of carrots grown from n given quantity of seed (prize given by the Matau branch of the Farmers’ Union and seed given by Mr. Hale, Stratford): Bruce • Rawlinson. School garden work (prize given by the teacher, Miss H. G. Smith): Bruce Rawlinson. Mr. Rawlinson congratulated, the teacher on the successful results of the examinations. He thanked the Women’s Division for its kindness in giving the children an enjoyable evening, and Mrs. W. McCoard for her gift of the cake. The proceeds ensured that every child in the district, of school age or otherwise, received a present. Several children’s novelty dances were held and these were won as follows:— Monte Carlo, Charlie Erikssen and Thelma McCoard 1, John McCoard and Avis McCoard 2; lucky hat waltz, Gordon Rawlinson and Gwittha McCoard; Monte Carlo waltz, Muriel Wolfsbauer and Mildred Moody 1, Gordon Rawlinson and Gwittha McCoard 2. The .prizes for the novelty dances were given by Mesdames A. Smith, W. Rawlinson, A. Rolfe and W. McCoard and the paper hats were made and given by Mrs, A. Smith. Mr. W. McCoard, chairman of the Matau branch of the Farmers’ Union, said his branch intended to make the carrot competition an annual event and all children who wished to enter could now obtain the seed and get their plots ready during the holidays. Miss H. G. Smaill is spending her holiday vacation at Lower Hutt. Mrs. H. Larsen has returned from a visit to Inglewood and New Plymouth. Miss Petch, Toko, is the guest of Mrs. F. Chapman.
