TONGAPORUTU FAREWELL

SOUTHCOTT FAMILY HONOURED. The Tongaporutu hall was well filled on Thursday evening for a social in honour of Mrs. Southcott and family, who are leaving the district after being residents for more than 14 years. Friends were present from Okau and Mokau also, showing the high esteem in which the family is held. Dancing formed the main part of the programme, music being played by Miss O’Sullivan, with extras by Mrs. Beatty (Mokau), Messrs. J. Howell and F. Crudis were masters of ceremonies. Mr. Stratton, on behalf of the residents, expressed regret at the departure of Mrs. Southcott. She would be greatly missed; as she was always willing to give assistance whenever it was needed. He mentioned especially the help she had given all sports bodies. Mr. Stratton presented Mrs. Southcott with a dinner set. Mr. Claude Southcott received a cheque from the residents. Mr. Burton, on behalf of the golf club, presented Mrs. Southcott with a crystal rose bowl, thanking her for her help and generosity in the golf club’s activities. Mr. Burton, in the absence of the president of the tennis club, made a presentation of a set of carvers. Miss O’Sullivan on behalf of the Rover Basketball Club made reference to the many kindnesses Mrs. Southcott had shown them, and thanked her for the free use of the basketball court. Miss O’Sullivan then presented Mrs. Southcott with a salad set, and to Miss Gladys Southcott (a former member), a xylonite dressing table set. Mr. H. Bower replied on behalf of Mrs. Southcott and family. On behalf of the Tongaporutu Hall Club Mr. Stratton presented Mrs. Southcott with two floor rugs.
