PRAISE FOR TEACHERS

MIDHIRST SCHOOL BREAK-UP. SPECIAL PRIZES FOR CHILDREN. The breaking-up ceremony of the Midhirst school, which was to have been held at the school grounds, was because of wet weather held in the public hall. The time was spent with games and musical items. The leaving standard 6 pupils were presented with books, and special prizes were awarded Audrey Jakes, Tom Reid, Marjory Ogier, Molly Strong (writing), Geoffrey Bunning (science), Campbell Harkness (woodwork), lan McKinnon (history), Francis Ogier (writing), Mary Dravitzki (grammar), Margaret Strong (spelling), Dawn Lepper (geography). Forty of the pupils received good attendance certificates. Two bouquets of sweet peas and maidenhair fern were presented, by Jean Phillips and Lorna Fowler to the assisting teachers, Miss Harkness and Miss Carter. Mr. R. J. Phillips, chairman of the school committee, spoke of the good work of the teachers during the year and thanked the parents for their attendance. Mr. J. E. James, headmaster, thanked Mr. Phillips for his appreciation of the teachers’ work. He referred to the improvement that had been made to the grounds during the year. Mr. James spoke of the credit due to Mr. Phillips and of the excellent services he had rendered as chairman of the school committee. The leaving standard 6 pupils presented Mr. James with a silver serviette ring and two books. Mr. James responded. Afternoon tea was served by the women’s committee.
