WORKERS ON FARMS
UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE. BRITISH GOVERNMENT PLANS. British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Dec. 21. The text of the Government’s Bill to extend unemployment insurance to agricultural workers was published to-day. About 750,000 persons, including 50,000 women, are involved. The scheme is designed to deal with the unemployment rate of about 7.5 per cent. The Bill follows the main lines of the recommendations of the unemployment insurance committee except that it provides a somewhat higher rate of contribution and a benefit of 14s in the case of an adult male worker instead of the committee’s 12s. Employer, employee and State will each contribute a week. The scheme is financially self-contained and will bear no liabilities in respect of general unemployment.
