HAWERA LOAN POLL.

The verdict given by the Hawera ratepayers at yesterday’s loan poll was, as expected, so emphatic as to be practically a unanimous vote in favour of the Borough Council’s proposals. It was also an intimation that the burgesses of the municipality are determined to keep thein town in the front line of progress when essential public services are under consideration. Such a result must be extremely gratifying to the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, and his fellow councillors, to whom came the responsibility of rectifying weaknesses in the borough drainage system and to do so in a manner that will enable the improved services to form part of extensions it is known will be necessary before long to keep pace with the development of the district. When a local governing authority has to seek the approval of the ratepayers for fairly heavy capital expenditure out of loan money it must satisfy the public on two points at least. The first is that the need for the service upon which the expenditure is contemplated is real and pressing. The second, that the plans it is proposed to follow have been drawn up with skill and exactitude, and with due regard for future developments. Yesterday’s poll at Hawera made it clear that the ratepayers of that town have been thoroughly satisfied on both those points in regard to the drainage works proposed. The financial details having been arranged and the approval of the burgesses gained, there should be nothing to prevent the completion of the work within the next few months. Its completion will also remove a certain amount of real anxiety from those entrusted with the civic welfare of an important town and district.
