TARANAKI PROSPECTS

MANY HORSES ARRIVE FINAL TRIALS TODAY MUCH INTEREST AROUSED The New Plymouth track should bear a busy appearance this morning, when nearly all the horses with engagements at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting, which will open on Thursday, will be given their final trials. The interest will be the greater because of the presence of a, number of visiting horses. Seven visitors arrived at the weekend and four more appeared yesterday. A further big contingent is expected by the Auckland express train this morning. The number of the visiting horses is a record for a Christmas meeting, and their presence is adding a great deal of interest to the gathering. Another pleasing feature will be the. presence of a much more capable class of jockey than has been the case in recent years. The New Plymouth apprentice, R. W. Savage, one of the Dominion’s most capable lightweights, will ride on both days, while others will be L. Dulieu, L. Clifford, J. Day, R. J. Flower, C. Shield, J. Mcßae and M. Kearns. The course proper is in wonderful order after the recent rains, having a splendid sole of grass. The weather appears to be settled and everything points to the club having a record gathering. The new and enlarged totalisator indicator has. been completed. QUIET MORNING NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK MORE VISITORS ARRIVE Considering that the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting opens on Thursday there was surprisingly little galloping on the New Plymouth track yesterday morning. Nearly all the horses were restricted to tasks of the'useful variety. Several of the visiting horses were exercised and the final trials this morning should be full of interest. Court Arma, who looks bright and well, was allotted a good working gallop over six furlongs on the trial grass, the last two furlongs taking 27 4-ss. Chief Miarionette covered two rounds on the plough, the second at a good swinging three-quarter pace. She has progressed since racing at Feilding. Useful tasks were performed by Red Sand, Nuget, Grateful, Wahine Nui, Script and Beau Star. Nuget with! Sporting Song for a mate •was given a barrier start. Others to go •to the barrier were Royal Artist, Clessamor and Script. All shaped well. Hinkey Pinkey slipped over five furlongs in Im 4s on the trial grass. She shewed a lot of pace in the early stages. H. Rama’s pair, Tooley Street and Horotiu, were given easy pace work. •They are bearing a well-trained appearance. Gay Talkie, an attractive looking two-year-old, was worked on the inside grass. Lucidus and Orac did steady work on the plough. Sir Tommy and Lady Zinnia did easy pace work. Headmistress completed two rounds of half pace work on the plough by sprinting the last two furlongs in 275. She is a fit mare. Gay Poto bowled over' five furlongs at a little better than three-quarter pace. Lady Kyra and Bonny Glow were sent twice round at a sqlid half pace. Useful tasks were performed by Davistcck, Aussie Ra, Glenvane, Ngaterahiri, Whoa Johnnie, Royal Artist, Tahuangi and Chikara. Additional riding engagements are:— J. Day: Orac, Lucidus. J. McLaughlin: Kaola, Eara. L. Clifford: Chikara.

AWAPUNI CANDIDATES NEW PLYMOUTH HORSES The New Plymouth-trained horses Davistock and Aussie Ra will do their Christmas racing at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting at Awapuni. They will be taken south to-day and will be ridden by P. Burgess. Though Courtega and Glenvane from [the same stable are also engaged at Awapuni no definite arrangements have been made for them and they may be found racing at New Plymouth. Davistock in the Manawatu Cup will be tackling a mile and a-half journey for the first time. Last season ho could not see out a fast run mile and a-quarter but his stamina has improved and during the last three months he has experienced no trouble in running that distance out. How he would fare in a fast run 12 furlongs is problematical but this event is seldom truly run aud with an easy early pace Davistock would be handy at the finish. So far this season Aussie Ra has not raced with the best of luck but at his last start he beat all but Round Score in the Rongotea Hack at Feilding. He has gone the right way since then and with ordinary luck should be able to pay his way.. NO GALLOPING DONE PACE WORK AT AWAPUNI By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Dec. 22. No galloping was attempted at Awapuni this morning, all horses being restricted to pace work on the plough and the inner grass. Although the weather is brilliantly fine, the course benefited from rain and promises to be in splendid order on Boxing Day. The Riccarton mentor, Lloyd, arrived with Tout le Monde, Invoice and Silver Jest. A stable apprentice, Messervey, will ride the cup candidate.
