MARTINBOROUGH racing WELL PERFORMED COLT Martinborough, who heads the weights for the Bidwill Nursery Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting, is a colt who did his spring racing under A. D. Webster’s charge in Victoria, where he had several starts and ■ as once a winner. He will be an interesting runner if he goes to the post. Martinborough appears to have had half a dozen races in Australia. His success was achieved in the second division of the St. Alban’s Handicap, four furlongs, at the Moonee Valley Cup meeting on October 26. He was unplaced in the V.R.C. Maribyrnong-Plate, won by Fidelity, but he was produced again on the third day of' the meeting, when he was out sharing' the lead most of the way With' Beechwood (the winner) in the Byron Moore Stakes and finished a close third. ■ . B . . Following his winning effort an Australian critic wrote:. “The race went to Martinborough, a New Zealand-bred colt trained by A., D. Webster. Martinborough is a big fellow and is so remarkably well grown and developed that one could almost believe him to be a three-year-old. He was closely attended to the home turn, by the little Manfred colt Christmas Carol, but he then drew away to win comfortably from the big Cunalis colt Arbalest, who finished strongly to narrowly cut Christmas Carol out of second place.” Martinborough is a chestnut colt by Lord Quex (son of Lemberg) from the English-bred.- mare Piquant, by Somme Kiss (son of Sunstar) from Crundell Chick, by Fowling Piece (son of Carbine) from Crundell Hill, by Marcion. He is thus a half-brother- to Easy Money, who three years ago won a division of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington for Mr. W. R. Kemball. Maryborough, however, is raced by his breeder, Mr. E. D. Martin. In New Zealand he was registered as Cayenne, but at the

request of the registrar the name was changed .to Martinborough, the name cf Mr. Martin’s place of abode in New Zealand. HORSES FROM HAWERA AUCKLAND; MANAWATU LOWENBERG’S CHANCES (By “Limited.”) The Hawera trainer, O. Cox, left for Auckland last night with the Auckland Cup and Great Northeim Derby candidates, Fersen and Lowenberg, and the two-year-old Brilliancy, who is engaged in the handicap two-year-old events. J. Brown with Notium and R. Brough with Bantry are booked to leave for the north .on Monday. Ellerslie racegoers will see a very much improved three-year-old in

; Lowenberg in comparison with what f they saw .in the. Guineas race, and to- . day he appears better than when he left for Riccarton to win the New Zealand Derby,. His last gallop befo ie leaving was convincing; on a narrow track he had the outside position and was never going very comfortably, for the six furlongs necessitated negotiating three awkward turns. The big course at Ellerslie and the distance will again suit Lowenberg, who may have his. name enrolled among the many dual winners of the New Zealand and . Great Northern Derbys. Though.not a robust horse, Fersen. is i a. good stayer and ran a very fair race in the New Zealand Cup. He is in splen- , did order and his track efforts have i been very attractive. Fersen is considered to have more than an outside l chance in • the Auckland Cup and .dis-. , tance handicap in the north. H. Goldfinch is to ride Lowenberg in ■ th’ Derby and several applications - from i Auckland lightweights ' for the ride on

Fersen have been received. / ■ The youngster Brilliancy has made ex- . cellent progress since his. race, when he i ran Very creditably. He is a determined i finisher in his track gallops and cannot : be left out of calculations in his races. : Bantry has had hard races and with 1 one exception—at Waverley—has always been in the picture. His gallop on Thursday was one of his best track | efforts and he races well at Ellerslie, so that the confidence of the trainer, Dick Brough, in Bantry is likely, to be i rewarded. Notium, too, has also improved since racing, and on Tuesday sprinted brillia~tly, running his best half-mile to ■ date. If he strikes a fast track Notium < seems sure to be in the money in his events. Altogether the prospects of the Hawera horses at Auckland look decidedly favourable, with a preference for 1 the chances of Lowenberg, Notium and Bantry. . : For Manawatu and Marton. C. Jackson has Aga Khan looking well - ■ ' •'

and in something like his old shape. Intentions are to race Aga Khan at Palmerston North on the concluding day of the meeting and at the Marton at New Year. In this programme a race should be selected for Jackson’s- horse to make a good showing.
