MADELEINE CARROLL FOR STATES. Hollywood’s latest British “capture” is Miss Madeleine Carroll. She will leave for Hollywood on the completion of the picture she is now making for the Gaumont-British Corporation—“ Secret Agent,” based on Mr. Somerset Maugham’s “Ashenden”—and will work for Walter Wanger an the Twentieth Cen-tury-Fox Corporation. In “Secret Agent” she is playing opposite John Gielgud with Alfred Hitchcock directing. Miss Carroll has had many American offers in recent years, and since the success of her latest picture, “The Thirty-Nine Steps,” in the United States, they have become more tempting than ever. Her chief grievance against British film producers is that they do not give her enough work.
