JUNIOR RECITAL
MRS. SUNDERLAND’S CHOIR. Versatility was an outstanding feature of the performance given by the pupils of Mrs. Sunderland in their annual song recital held in the Y.W.C.A. hall, New Plymouth, last night before a crowded audience. Credit must be given to Mrs. Sunderland for her untiring and painstaking tuition of these children, whose ages range from seven to 13 years. The standard of performance was surprisingly high, and it is hoped more will be heard of these young singers. It is evident that with the talent they possess and the training they are receiving, not only in singing but also in music, will fit them to take their places as future choristers.
The first part of the programme consisted of old English folk songs, the children taking part being dressed in appropriate costumes. Peter Williams greatly pleased the audience with his delightful singing of “The Jovial Beggar.” The second half of the programme consisted of selected duets and concerted items. The most outstanding performer in this recital was Ken Bullin, who delighted those present with his soprano voice. Given the opportunity this boy should go far. The pieces undertaken were difficult, but were sung with a depth of feeling that hardly seemed possible in a boy of 12 years. Those taking part in the recital were: The choir, “The Jovial Beggar,” Peter Williams; “May Day at Islington,” the choir; “Funny Little Brownie,” Brian Williams, “Three Old Maids of Lee,” Nancy and Allison McQueen and Ruth Sunderland; “Come Lassies and Lads,” the choir; “Who’ll Buy My Lavender,” Maisie and Juliet James and Peggy Burrows; “May Day,” Maisie and Freda Harding; “E Pari Ra,” “Tuti” Papakura; “With Jockey to the Fair,” the choir; “Bells of St. Michael’s Tower,” “Rolling Down to Rio,” the choir; solo, Ruth Sunderland; “Sweet and Low,” Nancy and Allison McQueen, Winnie Bent and Ruth Sunderland; “Waiata Poi,” Ken Bullin; “The Swallows,” Peter Williams; “Excelsior” . and “The Blue Danube,” Arch Sunderland and Ken Bullin; “The Dawn” and “Spring Song”; “Pilgrims’ Chorus,” the choir. The accompanist was Miss G. Greenwood.
