PROSPECTS OF KING REY HORSES FOR TARANAKI ’ THE FIELDS REVIEWED

The improved state of the roads and the opening of the Stratford-Main Trunk railway have brought the Waikato meeting within easy range of Taranaki and a strong contingent of horses from the province will be competing at the Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting, which will open at Te Rapa to-day. A number of the runners have shown form. There was merit in Supreme Court’s second to Oratory at Wanganui, and he has been galloping well of late. Gloucester showed plenty of speed in good class hack fields at Ellerslie, failing only over the last bit. Worthy King and Jan Ridd are speedy, while Brilliant Acre has a good reputation, which his fourth at Cambridge on Labour Day seems to indicate has some foundation. Erination’s two wins at Ellerslie draw attention to his prospects. Despite his 11.3 he may be capable of running prominently for a mile and a half. Travelling Agent is reported to be well forward but would be better suited by a little more distance. If Dark Marble fences correctly he should be handy at the end,'while King’s Archer and Greek Gold are likely improvers. Merry Lap’s two wins at Whangarei were achieved in easy fashion, suggesting that he will make good over the small fences. None of the others has- any credentials. Lord Vai is a doubtful starter. Alchemic has raced so consistently this season that he will command respect with all his weight. The distance should suit Bantry. Teddy Boys two vans at Whangarei will not be forgotten. At Wanganui Flit Acre beat Entail. Kilberis is more than useful and Lady Eka’s seconds at Wanganui and Waverley represent good form. Light Comedy’s fine second to Mazir at Ellerslie points to him being prominent, especially as he is a good beginner. Tin Lap, Mustang and Valrent have chances, but the public may favour LIGHT COMEDY ALCHEMIC LADY EKA. •

Though Kelly’s form at Ellerslie was too bad to be true he would have to stage a tremendous improvement to win with 9.0. King Rey makes far more appeal. He was the unlucky runner in the King Edward Memorial; he was flying in third place at the end. He should hold Mungatoon safe, though the latter usually races well at Te Rapa. Prince Colossus may need the race and Baroscope is too unreliable. Imamint’s form al Ellerslie was not impressive, but Gay Broney’s win at Whangarei demonstrated that this useful horse is back to form. Sir Abb’s good second to Sinking Fund at Ellerslie and his recent good work should ensure him of a big following. Galilee has the pace but will have to be taken on trust over the distance. Gay Rose is jys a possibility, but Velocipede after his decisive win at Whangarei may claim more attention. The New Plymouth pair Sporting Song and Tahurangi are in great order and might upset calculations. In a good pool the favourites may be KING REY SIR ABB GAY BRONEY. CLAUDELANDS HIGHWEIGHT. Of £l5O. Boughal does not appeal over a mile but Nun Nicer will run. the distance out and she is an improver. Adeline and Scotch Nation both raced well enough at Ellerslie to possess winning chances. Master Norval and Desert Star appear lights of other days, but Psychologist occasionally bobs up when least expected. Grand Score will have friends, and if reserved Teddy Boy should be in the picture. Killadar is also a likely lightweight. Speculation may take a wide range but good support may come for NUN NICER SCOTCH NATION KILLADAR.

The two slashing races that Queen’s Council ran at Elelrslie last month will ensure her of a big following. In both those races she finished in front of Gay Chief, though the latter’s good showings at Trentham suggest that he is improving. Golden Blonde, a winner at Gisborne, made a bold showing in the Avondale Stake. Maxown is bred the right way while Ned Cuttie has galloped well enough at Hawera to give him a chance. Surella, Surview and Larwood are all possibilities, but the main fancies may be QUEEN’S COUNCIL GAY CHIEF GOLDEN BLONDE. CAMBRIDGE HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Six furlongs.

Impasto is likely to need the race. Sinking Fund and Star Artist, both winners at Ellerslie, are a fit pair and are galloping well.' Rereatu was responsible for a brilliant track gallop at Ellerslie last week and would only require to be caught in the right mood to be handy at the finish. Scotland and Namakia will have friends, but at the weights Dubarry makes more appeal. However, such is in the same stable as Star Artist and it is not likely that both will start. Royal Secret should go well but will find it difficult to concede weight to the improving Astarth, who won on the second day at Ellerslie in solid style. The New Plymouth pair Lady Kyra and Refresher have both been working in attractive fashion, with preference for the former. Though he' would be better suited by a distance Kahapa is such a good hack that he is sure to be in demand. The long straight may find Triune and Lady Ruler out, but Wahine Reihi should be handy at the end. Bonnie Song, a winner at Cambridge, is reported to be an extra smart hack and he is sure to command a big following. Mungacre and Whirling have been working well, and Calshot’s fourth in the Trial at Trentham showed that he will be entitled to consideration here.
