MORE KNITTING FOE THE BABY. t In response to this week’s special request I am giving instructions for making a knitted pilch to go with the baby’s coat described last week. You will need two ounces of three-ply wool, a pair of number nine needles and a short length of washing elastic for the waist. THE BACK. Begin at the waist by casting on 68 stitches. Knit into the backs of the first row to get a firm edge. Knit three rows of ribbing, doing 2 plain and 2 purl, and make the holes to take the elastic; work 4 stitches in ribbing, make 1, (that is, bring the wool forward as though you were going to purl), and knit 2 together. Repeat to the end of the row, and work 10 more rows of ribbing. Now start the shaping for the back. Next row knit plain to within 8 stitches from end of the row and turn. Begin all the following rows with a slip-stitch. Next 2 rows, knit to within 12 stitches from end of row and turn. Next 2 rows, knit io within 1(5 stitches from end of row and turn. Next 2 rows, knit to within 20 stitches from end of row and turn. Continue like this, leaving 4 more stitches unworked at the end of each row, until 12 stitches remain in the middle of the work. Then knit across all the stitches, and continue in plain knitting. Increase 1 stitch at both ends of the work in every 10th row until you have 78 stitches on the needle. Work 9 rows plain, then decrease by knitting the first two and last two

stitches of every row together until you have 24/ stitches on the needle. Work 2 rows on these 24 stitches, then increase 1 stitch at the beginning and end of every row until you have 78 stitches again. Continue in plain knitting, decreasing 1 stitch at both ends of the work in every 10th row, until you have 68 stitches. Work 9 rows plain. Next work 10 rows of 2-plain, 2-purl ribbing, then make holes for the elastic like you did jfor the back and work 3 more rows of ribbing. Cast, off, press the work. Sew up l the side-seams, thread elastic through the holes at the waist line and join the ends. Wendy’s Dressmaker.
