COX’S TWO CHARGES

RICCARTON PROSPECTS.

HAWERA TRAINERS’ YEAR, • (By “Limited.”) The Hawera trainer, O. Cox, who is at Riccarton with his charges, Fersen and Lowenberg, has the good wishes of Taranaki sportsmen with him at the racing carnival to-day, and as the proyince’s punters are second to none in the Dominion in loyalty Fersen and Lowenberg, who left in tip top condition, should be well supported in their engagements. Cox is no stranger to Riccarton and has ample knowledge of the requirements needed to make a bold showing on its classical racecourse. In 1922 he was successful in the Metropolitan Handicap with a good- handicap performer, Marqueteur. In 1925 he. scored in the New Zealand Cup and the Canterbury Cup with The Banker, and in 1928 he narrowly missed securing the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps double with Reremoana and Lady . Desmond, Reremoana carrying 9.9 to victory in the Great Easter and Lady Desmond going under by a length to Hynanna in the Great Autumn. , At the same meeting Reremoana won the Challenge Stakes, beating Cimabue and Eulalie. Fersen will disappoint track watchers if he is not fighting at the end of the New Zealand Cup two miles, and the Riccarton track should suit the long-striding Lowenberg to a nicety.

Hawera Training Centre. The prospects of horses trained at Hawera seem decidedly promising, for .with, the season little advanced horses from the centre have already secured £ll5O for eight wins and various platings. J. Fryer has the biggest team, in which are included two-year-olds' that ar* promising material and jumpers in Soloist, Panloff and Just Off that should their way. Alchemic and Ruri have already proved their usefulness and have only to remain sound to earn further stake money. After having one race Supreme Court has suffered from tenderfooted ness that has prevented him from developing to his best, but he will attract attention the first time he is paraded to race. Fryer heads the list of Hawera trainers so far this season with six wins, despite several of his team having to be eased on account of soreness. Horses trained by Fryer have so far accounted for £660 of stake money. O. Cox with one win and four placings has won nearly £3OO, while R. Brough with a similar tally has scored £172 10s. J. Brown, usually a winner early in the season, has so far failed to score a win in the Dominion, but Link Divine received her preparation at his hands and three weeks after landing in Victoria won at the first time of asking and again • on Saturday last, her stake earnings be- . ing about £lOOO. The Notium has run two creditable seconds in four starts and will have his next outing at Feilding at the end of the month. Gay Chief has done really well since rating at Trentham, where he ran an excellent race in the Wellesly Stakes, being a close third aftr starting slowly ■and being well back from-the leaders at the false rail. A programme to race at the Waikato, Takapuna and Auckland spring meetings has been mapped out for Gay Chief, and his prospects seem decidedly good. Gay Chief comes from a., successful family, his dam having left winners in Lady Lois, Tuahine (dam of Tuirau, a favourite for the New Zealand Cup to-day), Persham, The Fox and Nucleus, dam of Gay Circle, a-winner of three races in Australia this spring.

Another Capt. Bunsby, Trainer J. Brown returned from a visit to Wanganui on Wednesday, bringing a two-year-old colt by Capt. Bunsby from Rewa Rewa, the latter by Taitoko from Torpilliere, a full sister to the New Zealand Cup winner Tortulla. The youngster is an exceptionally well grown and well conformed two-year-old and a typi-» cal Capt. Bunsby. Including Link Divine, k he makes the fourth of that sire’s progeny to be trained at Hawera. The youngster is owned by Mr. Manguson, Wanga-. nui, who raced Rewa Rewa and bred tha colt.
