POSTAL OFFICIAL LEAVES

PRESENTATION TO MR. A. POPLE. Recognition of the efficiency and popularity of Mr. D. Pople, mechanician in charge of the Stratford telephone exchange, who has been promoted to senior mechanician at Wellington, was made yesterday when members of the Stratford post office staff gathered to bid him farewell. On behalf of the staff the postmaster, Mr. D. McCready, presented to Mr. Pople an electric kettle. He congratulated Mr. Pople on his well deserved promotion, said Mr. McCready. The telephone branch had been run very smoothly, under Mr. Pople’s charge, and the fact that there had been so few complaints was very much to Mr. Pople’s credit. At Wellington he would be directly under the notice of headquarters, where his ability would no doubt receive further recognition. He was sorry to leave after nine happy years at Stratford, said Mr. Pople. He had had many friends at Stratford and would always remember them. GOOD WRESTLING AT STRATFORD. BLOMFIELD-CATALINO TO-NIGHT. Tony da tali no, the well-built and active Italo-American wrestler, has created a favourable impression in the matches ' of his New Zealand tour and Stratford ' enthusiasts will welcome the opportunity , of seeing him in action against ( the New I Zealander “Lofty” Blomfield to r night. In I the United States Catalino has mixed | with the leading figures in the game and one of the men with whom he has had work-outs is Dan O’Mahoney, the Irishman, who recently annexed the world title. O'Mahoney’s speciality is what is known as the “Irish whip” and, although Catalino does not claim to have mastered this devastating hold, he has effected a variation of it which he has found extremely effective. Another of Catalino’s favourite attacking grips is a Japanese chin-lock which, when properly applied, usually brings a submission fall. Catalino has had championship bouts with Browning and Londos and prominent wrestlers whom he has met are Henri de Glane and “Strangler” Lewis. Blomfield’s advance during the past year has been little shdrt of sensational. Last season he made six appearances without scoring a win but, following a visit to the United States under the care of Dan 1 Koloff. he has improved out of all sight 1 and the only man who has shown definite superiority over him in New Zea- 1 land this season is Earl McCready. 1
