BUSINESS MEN MEET

TOUR OF OVERSEAS DELEGATES. REQUEST TO VISIT TARANAKI. A request that overseas delegates to the Empire congress of Federated Chambers of Commerce to be held in New Zealand next year should visit Taranaki, will be made by the Hawera Chamber, it was decided at the monthly meeting of the executive yesterday. Those present were Messrs. E. K. Cameron (chairman), E. M. Bardsley, J. H. Fletcher,, T. M. Ellis, W. M. Eggleston, A. Coleman, E. Dixon, F. W. Horner and R. S. Sage (secretary). In connection with the entries for the examinations to be conducted by the chamber Messrs. Eggleston and Coleman were empowered to inquire about entries from shorthand students at the Hawera High School. Advice was received of the inclusion of Taranaki in the itineraries of Australian tourists on five cruise ships visiting New Zealand waters this summer. The chamber considered whether it would be possible to arrange a visit to Dawson Falls as a break in the journey from New Plymouth to Wellington, but it was thought that the four days available in New Zealand would not allow such an arrangement in addition to the excursion to North Egmont. Members were urged in a circular from the associated chambers organisation to assist in placing returned soldiers in employment where needed. Although members of the chamber thought that the class of work they themselves had to offer would not be suitable for the cases mostly concerned, it was agreed that the chamber could probably assist. The chairman was empowered to confer with the Hawera branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.

The chamber considered the report of Mr. E. R. S. Dale, its delegate to the recent annual conference of New Zealand chambers in Hawkes Bay. The report was amplified by explanations by Messrs. Ellis and Coleman. Mr. Homer commended the deliberations of the conference as containing instructive material not otherwise available to business men. It represented the educated thought which presented many angles to an argument not otherwise obtainable. The chairman explained the position in regard to the proposed commencement of chain pharmacies in New Zealand, and members agreed to keep the matter under consideration. Advice was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce that the Empire congress of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce was to be held in New Zealand next year, and endeavours were being made to have the overseas delegates remain in the Dominion for three or four weeks subsequently.
