SERVICE APPRECIATED

MR. AND MRS. EDWARDS? OKATO. SOCIAL IN THEIR HONOUR. As a mark of appreciation of the services rendered as a sportsman and a citizen, a social evening was tendered to Mr. A. P. Edwards at the Okato hall on Wednesday night. A large and representative gathering of members of the variouh clubs and organisations of the district was present. Represented were the hall committee, Farmers’ Union, bowling club, football club, cricket club, swimming club, tennis club, Legion of Frontiersmen, rifle club, domain board, M.U.1.0.0.F. lodge and badminton ciub. In the absence of Mr. L. D. Hickford, who was indisposed, Mr. A. J. Smith pl-esided. The evening was occupied with songs, recitations and speeches. Mr. Smith on behalf of the people of. Okato expressed appreciation of the good work done by Mr. and Mrs. Edwards in the district. They were always ready to help, said Mr. Smith, and during their temporary absence Okato would be the poorer. On behalf of the bowling club Mr. L. Andrews said Mr. Edwards was always a leading member, he having been president of the club for the past two seasons and secretary this season. Tire club would lose a valuable member. Mr. J. Power, president of the swimming club, expressed appreciation of the work done by Mf. Edwards for the club. He said he hoped it would not be long before Mr. Edwards would again be able to take an active part in the club’s affairs.

On behalf of the cricket club Mr. T. Larking spoke in glowing terms of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards', good work. They were members that the club could not afford to lose, he said. Mr. C. Maxwell, secretary of the hall ccmmittee, said it was a pleasure to work with Mr. Edwards on the committee.

Mr. S. Roebuck on behalf of fellow business men said Mr. Edwards was not cnly a prominent citizen but he was also an asset to the garages at Okato. With his string of vans Mr. Edwards had always kept the garages going, and he hoped that in leaving the district Mr. Echyafcls would not be causing more unemployment. Mr. E B. Corbett also spoke.

In reply Mr. Edwards on behalf of Mrs. Edwards and himself thanked the speakers for their remark' of appreciation, which he thought were slightly exaggerated. He hoped it would not be long before his wife and himself would be able to renew their association vith the clubs and organisations of the district.
