MANAIA TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING BUSINESS. SATISFACTION WITH FINANCES. The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held on Thursday. Those present were Messrs. L. C. Harrison (chairman), L. A. G. R. Watts, H. Mead, A. J. Christie and J. A. G. Cosgrove. The treasurer reported that rates and general receipts totalled £366 Is and No. 5 scheme refund on wages £137 17s. Expenditure items were: General account, 1 £167 13s 3d; wages paid No. 5 scheme, £137 17s; Manaia Domain Board, £ll 0s 9d; Manaia cemetery trustees, £l3 15s; Waimate domain, £2 12s. It was decided that the painting of the interior of the town hall be postponed and the covering of the stairs with suitable material was held over in the meantime. The secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Union wrote enclosing the board’s returns of percentage of gate receipts. Congratulations to the town clerk, Mr. J. Rodie, were voiced by the chairman on his work in making the board’s financial position very sound. The balancesheets were returned without a “tag.” It was decided to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs asking for a grant from the profits of art for the improvement of domain 'sports grounds. The conductor of the Manaia Municipal Band, Mr. J. A. G. Cosgrove, reported that practices were being held twice weekly and were fairly well attended. The band played' an open-air concert in the rotunda and was practising a new programme. It was decided to hold a “clean-up” day a fortnight before Christmas. The board went into committee to consider the question of taking proceedings for the collection of all outstanding rates. FUTURE OF OEO HALL LITTLE INTEREST DISPLAYED. “Has the usefulness of the public hall at Oeo passed?” This question is exercising the minds of some of the residents. Once the scene of many a happy winter entertainment the hall has been practically without use for the past few months. Nor has there been an active committee, but a special meeting of residents was called for last Tuesday evening to consider the renewal of the mortgage on the building. Only five attended and the business was not proceeded with. It is felt by some of the residents that modern methods of travel have more or less 1 made the local hall unnecessary. Otakeho, Auroa and Pihama halls are all within easy reach and some say the population of the Oeo district is insufficient to maintain a separate hall. It is a problem that will soon be decided one way or the other.
