ICY HAND OF WINTER
TARANAKI FEELS ITS GRIP. WEATHER BETTER YESTERDAY. Winter has made one of its last treacherous sallies on Taranaki, and the province suddenly felt two days ago the clutch of an icy hand. Snow and hail fell on Mount Egmont, though this is the first time for about three years, such a cold snap has occurred after Labour Day. About daylight yesterday a heavy hailstorm swept across New Plymouth, damaging gardens in Westown, Frankleigh Park and Vogeltown, Clattering pn to Waitara, it beat startlingly against roofs and the stones piled up a foot high against the banks. Later in the day the weather cleared somewhat but the temperature remained uncompromisingly frosty. Snowfalls occurred at all the hostels at Mount Egmont .on Thursday and hailstorms took up the assault yesterday. Though the snow and hail did not lie long on account of the warmth of the groupd the snow-Hne has advanced considerably down the mountain side, It Is pnly about half mile from North Egmont and near the Maunganui hut it is probably, deep enough for ski-ipg, At Dawson Falls the ski tracks are well covered,
Last night better weather wag reported from the three houses and those in charge were hopeful of a fine week-end. It was still cold but the hailstorms were over.
