WIN FOR MISS 0. KAY HAWERA WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE. MRS. WALKLEY BEATEN 4 AND 3. Sinking a nine-feet putt at the 15th for a birdie three, Miss O. Kay beat Mrs. W. G. Walkley in the final of the Hawera Women’s Golf Club championship on Wednesday. A strong wind and occasional heavy showers were not conducive to good,golf, although both players played some fine shots in the concluding stages; Both players were driving well from the tee, and although Miss Kay often shaded her .opponent there was little between the pair. Miss Kay made better use of her brassie and Mrs. Walkley was short with her approaches. Miss Kay was surer on the greens, Mrs. Walkley being inclined to over-putt after failing to make the distance with her approaches. After being all square at the turn the pair settled down to better golf, and although Miss Kay won four of the next sik holes, two being halved in fives, there was veyy little between the players. , ' The first hole was halved in fives after Miss Kay had outdriven her opponent. Mrs. Walkley got away a good , tee shot, but Miss Kay. was clo§e up and did better with her brassie, being on the green for three. Mrs. Walkley was three feet short of the green with her third and Miss Kay sank a six-feet putt for four* and the hole. Miss Kay was on the green at Exodus for three''and took two on the green, Mrs. Walkley putting her third into a bunker from which she took two strokes to recover. Although Mrs. Walkley was in the' rough with her tee sljot against the wind, she managed to get her second well away and halve the hole in fives after Miss Kay had just missed a long putt for four, Miss Kay was short of the green with her tee shot at the short fifth and Mrs. Walkley was on the upper edge of the green. Miss Kay took two to get within a foot of the pin and Mrs. Walkley placed her bail alongside her opponent’s to win the hole in three to four. The sixth was halved in fives. The next 'was a disastrous hole. Both got into the rough. Mrs. Walkley topped her second and the ball travelled but' a short distance, and she took her third to get out of trouble. Miss Kay’was unable to find her ball, and playing her next off the tee topped it badly. She did little better with her next, and the following shot was nearly out of bounds. Her club caught the .fence as she made her approach shot and it cost her seven to get on. the green and two more to sink the ball. Mrs. Walkley won the' hole with a. seven for all square. ! * ■ . Mrs. Walkley, however, became one up at the eighth, when she sank a five or six-feet putt for a five. Miss Kay missing an easier putt for a half. Miss Kay evened matters before the turn, when she outdrove her opponent and was on .the green for two, Mrs. Walkley going' through. Miss Kay reached within 9 inches of the pin with her third, and Mrs. Walkley . missed a six-feet putt by inches with her fourth. Miss Kay was on the green with her tee shot at Smoko, Mrs. Walkley taking two to, get there. Miss Kay was just short of the hole with her putt and took the hole with a bogey three. Failing to get her second cleanly away, Miss Kay halved the 11th in fives, Mrs. Walkley getting within ten yards of the green with her second. Both had good drives into the wind from the 12th ' tee. Mrs. Walkley was within two feet of the pin when Miss Kay stymied her with her third and Mrs. Walkley just failed to overcome the difficulty with her fourth. Miss Kay’s second shot placed her wjthin three feet of the pin at the 13th, but Mrs. Walkley just missed with, a 15ft. putt for a four, and Miss Kay won the hole. . Mrs. Walkley outdrove Miss Kay by 20 yards at the. 14th, but she sliced her second and Miss Kay went past the pin with her third. Her next was 18 inches short. Mrs. Walkley was short with her third and took two to halve the hole. The champions?’p was won at the 15th after both players had got well up with their drives. Mrs. Walkley went through the green with her second, while Miss Kay reached within nine feet of the pin. COREY BEATS MISS McLEAN. , . Beating Miss J. McLean at the 18th hole, Mrs. A. Corey won the Hawera ; Women’s Golf Club junior championship by 1 up. On the whole the standard of golf was detrimenta|ly affected by the ' ’.weather. v ' Miss McLean win; the first and third holes, but Mrs. Corey evened matters with i’-.e next two. She won the 6th and 7th and the Sth was halved, Mixs McLean winning the 9th. to be one down at the turn. Miss McLean won the 10th for all square and the next two holes were halved. The match was all square at the 17th after Miss McLean had .won the 14th and 15th. Mrs. Corey got well away on the last fairway, but Miss McLean got into difficulties in a wet patch and it cost her two strokes, Mrs. Corey , being on ,the green with her third.
