SUDDEN COLD SNAP
HAIL AND SNOW IN TARANAK*. HEAVY RAINFALL IN THE SOUTH. A sudden cold snap was experienced in South Taranaki yesterday, when with a change in the wind from west to the south hail fell in some districts and light snowfalls were experienced at Dawson Falls and on Skeet Road. Travellers from Hawera* to Patea encountered blinding rain, and the pastures around Riverlea and Awatuna were white with hail. Conditions generally were miserably cold. Light showers of rain fell early in the morning but at mid-day a long downpour was experienced at Hawera and in surrounding districts, hail falling in some areas. Between Hawera and Eltham there was ample evidence on the roadside of heavy hail showers. Although the ram was steady the rivers did not show any appreciable rise and no serious damage was reported. Fruit trees and gardens generally are showing the effect of the battering received from the hail.
Snow commenced falling at Dawson Falls during the morning and it was still falling at 8.30 p.m. with little indication of cessation. The trees for miles about were snow covered and there was a depth of three <Jf four inches on the ground.
