TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

PARKING IN HAWERA STREETS. RUSH OF BUSY MARKET DAY. At the last meeting of the Hawera Borough Council the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, spent some time in telling councillors of some of the street parking and traffic problems of Hawera. He suggested then that motorists should park their cars as close to the left hand line of the angle as possible and he also suggested that cycles should be parked in the angle formed by the left hand wheel of the car and the right hand wheel. With a typically busy Thursday afternoon as a basis, a News reporter spent some time in examination of the parking of cars and cycles yesterday to see whether the Mayor’s suggestions have been acted on or not. With practically every angle in High Street filled, it was interesting to see that, far from parking close to the left hand line, drivers had brought their vehicles erratically into the kerb. A surprising number of cars were parked close to the right hand line of the space and some even encroached on a second space. Some were parked at the correct angle and others were parked almost at right angles to the kerb. Cycles generally were parked in equally as haphazard a manner as the cars and several were stacked against posts on the footpaths, a method the Mayor particularly criticised. Of even more concern to pedestrians and other motorists is the habit of some drivers in stopping in the middle of the street. One car that was parked that way had six cars held up behind it. CHRISTMAS CHEER CONCERT. SAVAGE CLUB Preparations for the Hawera Savage Club’s Christmas cheer _ concert were made when a special meeting of the club was held on Wednesday night. A general discussion on the programme lasted some time, and it was decided to procure, if possible, a suitable sketch from Mr. Harison Cook, Wellington. Rangatira Claude Harrison presided over a good attendance. Programme possibilities include hakas, for which Tohunga M. R. Jones was appointed convener, sketches of topical interest, and other items, including musical interludes. It was decided to get in touch with several well-known singers, asking them to act as. soloists at the concert. Savage A. H. Harrop was appointed to take charge of the ballet and Rangatira Harrison and Ariki W. S. Gibson were chosen to produce sketches. The concert will be held in December, probably during the second week. GRAND THEATRE, HAWERA. “LOVE AT SECOND SIGHT” FINALLY What would you do if you discovered a perfect peach of a girl hiding in your flat, clad only in silken undies? Yes, that’s just what Bill Barclay, handsome young song writer and radio singer, did, but when her infuriated, father burst in he had to stop the entertaining and do a lot of explaining. How it all works outCmakes “Love at Second Sight” the most riotously funny, risque, romantic comedy , ever set to merry music. “Love at Second Sight” will be screened at the Grand Theatre, Hawera, finally to-night. The laughs are punctuated with some delightful music from the pen of Spolianski, the composer of “Tell Me Tonight.” “Public Hero No. 1” will commence i its season at the matinee tomorrow.
