ESCAPE FROM GAOL
SIMPLE RUSE OF PRISONER. WALKED OUT OF CONFINEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Oct. 31. A simple ruse was employed by William Kenneth Mailman, a labourer, aged 21, when he made his escape from Paparua gaol ,on October 17 last. He was given permission to leave the schoolroom and just walked into the night. Mailman appeared^in the Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer for the offence. He was deemed to be an incorrigible rogue, and was sentenced by Mr. E C. Lewey, S.M., to a term of six months’ gaol additional to his present sentence of three years’ reformative detention. Senior-Sergeant Calwell said that Mailman was sentenced at Wellington in August last to three years’ reformative detention on two charges of breaking and entering with theft. He was admitted to Paparua gaol that month, and on October 17 escaped, and was arrested two days later at Kaiapoi. The superintendent of the gaol, Mr. Leggett, said that on the evening he escaped Mailman was attending the institutional school. The convenience was situated outside the door of the classroom on the first floor landing. Mailman was given permission to leave the room and he did not return. He', must have gone downstairs, out on to the parade ground and away, continued Mr. Leggett. It was quite simple, and he could have walked away. ! j,
