HALLOWE’EN AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

ENJOYABLE SOCIAL ARRANGED.

Hallowe’en, the. ancient Scottish festival, was celebrated by the New Plymouth Caledonian Society in approved fashion at the Agricultural Hall last night. Round the walls were many appropriate symbols of the night, ghosts and lighted skulls while in the centre of the hall was a table with many lighted candles set in candlesticks of cabbage leaves in accordance with the old custom of maidens seeking knowledge of their future husbands. ' '

The chief, Mr. W. W. Thomson, was played in by the pipe band under PipeMajor Kirkland to the strains of the Pibroch of Donald Dhee. Mr. Thomson thanked all for their patronage of the inglesides during the year. He stated that it would be the last occasion on which he would stand before them as chief as his two years’ term of office would end shortly. He paid a glowing tribute to the splendid work of PipeMajor Kirkland, under whose direction the band had made a marked improvement. He concluded by thanking the executive for its great assistance ana asked t to give to his successor the same support as had been given to him. Mrs. D. E. Brown on behalf of the women’s committee presented Mrs. W. W. Thomson with a bouquet and Dr. Brown presented Mr. Thomson with an appropriate memento.

Quite a good percentage of those present’ was in fancy dress and these costumes were judged by Mesdames D. Blackley and C. A. Taylor. Though their task was not an easy one their awards gave every satisfactionThe prizewinners were:— ' Best costumes: Miss P. Campbell (Spanish Grandee), 1; Mrs. D. M. Quay (Spanish Dancer), 2. Most original: Mrs. Andrews (Christmas Tree). Best period: Miss C. Campbell and Miss D. Quay (Old English). Best Pair: Mi. and Mrs. Frewin (Mickey and Minnie Mouse). The winners of Monte Carlo waltz prizes were Miss McKenzie and Mr. J. Gooday, and Miss Marsh and Mr. Richards. .. . :

The music was supplied by Martin’s orchestra and the master of ceremonies was Mr. J. Corkill.
