ROADS PASSABLE

REPAIRS MADE AFTER SLIPS.

FLOOD WATERS NOW RECEDING.

More slips, all but one of a minor nature, were found yesterday to have come down on roads in the eastern districts of Stratford. The exception was one which blocked the road temporarily between Tututawa and Puniwhakau on the Puniwhakau side of the big slip that blocked the road on Wednesday. By yesterday morning the roads were all negotiable and a track was cleared through the Puniwhakau slip to let the cream lorry and mail van through. • Strangely enough, Mr F. Reader, Douglas, who was cut off in his cream lorry by the slip on Wednesday, had just passed through the cleared track when he was stopped by another that had evidently just occurred. It was not, however, a big one and roadmen cleared a track through it within half an hour. All the roads affected on Wednesday were therefore negotiable yesterday but in places drivers had to be particularly careful. The spot where the road is partially washed away on Douglas saddle is the most dangerous. Surface water its gradually receding and the Toko farmer, who found half his herd isolated on an island on Wednesday was able to milk yesterday without any inconvenience. Bridges were strained in some cases but as far as can be judged at present no serious damage was done.
