MR. HISLOP’S ADVICE.

(To the Editor). Sir,—At the Mayoral elections in Wellington Mr. Hislop was opposed by a party which alleged that the policy of himself and the councillors supporting him was against the welfare of the ratepayers. Mr. Hislop was eloquent oh the advisability of giving him and his party a chance to complete their policy, which he assured them was in the interests of the city as a whole. He strongly urged the citizens not to change horses in the middle of the river.

This position is now reversed. The present Government has inaugurated a plan of action to carry the country through the depression. It has achieved certain good results. The condition of the country is definitely sounder and better since it has been guiding its policy. So the Government says, “let us finish off .'what we have begun and don’t change horses in the middle of the stream.”

However, what was sauce for Mr., Hislop's goose is not (in his opinion) sauce for the Government gander. He now says our only hope is to change horses in the middle of the stream—completely reverse the policy under which some improvement has taken place, unbalance the balanced Budget by heavier expenditure and lower taxation, and replace the non-borrowing policy by borrowing £20.000,000 in four years. This is extremely inconsistent. It shows that when a movement is inaugurated to down one man (Mr. J. G. Coates) consistency and all other considerations go By the board. The objective of Mr. Hislop’s party is well known and is apparent from Mr. Hislop’s own speeches, namely, hostility to the Minister of Finance. This hostility was the reason for the Democratic Party’s formation, and, to ' achieve this end any means are being employed.—l am etc., NATIONALIST. Stratford, October 30.
