STILL IN LIMELIGHT FRENCH ‘PHANTOM’ HORSE The “phantom” horse Ecureuil V., who last year was substituted for the horses Hallencourt and Hanoi, and subsequently became the subject of an important trial for Turf frauds, has just been discovered running under a new name and to have had his back dyed (says a Paris report of September 10). After creating one of the biggest French Turf scandals, Ecureuil V. disappeared in the south of France and was forgotten. French C.I.D. officers have now established that the horse ran on the Paris trotting track of Vincennes on September 5 under the name of Guiseppe and won a second prize of about £5O. Suspicions were aroused because of the heavy betting on Guiseppe, who was said to be a horse with a poor record in the south of France, and had been regarded by many as an outsider. The C.I.D. officials investigated, and seized the supposed Guiseppe. A witness stated that he saw the horse’s back being dyed. At first no signs of dye were found, but when part of Ecureuil V.’s brown mane was shaved off it was found to be white underneath. M. Deluy, the owner, who comes from the south of France, is stated to have had in his possession a recipe for dyeing horses. Just over two months ago seven men were sent to prison at Pontorose, after Ecureuil V., believed to be a horse named Hallencourt, won a second-class race, enabling several people to win bets amounting to £6750. When the judges asked to see the horse after the race it had disappeared, and was found between a donkey and a sheep in a stable.
