PRIZE TO BE KEPT

ART UNION WINNER’S DECISION.

FORMER RENUNCIATION REVOKED

The winner of the first prize of £2OOO in the Better Prizes Art Union, Mr. A. G. Arnold, a young married man, of 39 Limbrick Street, Palmerston North, who renounced his claim to the money because of religious scruples, has sprung another surprise. It has been learned at Auckland that, after further consideration, Mr. Arnold had taken the money back. The money had actually been returned to the art union authorities as the outcome of a week’s praying by members of a religious sect to which Mr. Arnold belonged. Having used the nom-de-plume “Finance” Mr. Arnold kept his identity secret for four days, but when it was revealed other members of Mr. Arnold’s religious sect became perturbed, as the sect was opposed to participation in any form of lottery. Mr. Arnold, who is employed, as a

carpenter, is married and has a family of two small daughters and an infant child.

Interviewed at Palmerston North by the New Zealand Herald correspondent on Monday, Mr. Arnold said he now had the money in his possession, and intended to retain it for his own use. He did not deny that the money had previously

been returned, but he was unwilling to give an explanation of the matter. When asked what he intended to do with the money, he said it was nil ambition to set up in business as a carpenter. “I have been working for the sam employer for six years arx* now I want to work for myself,” W said.
