MARCH INTO MOUNTAINS
ITALIANS ALMOST UNOPPOSED THRUST TOWARD ADDIS ABABA ABISSINIANS WAIT IN HIGHLANDS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright Received 9 p.m. London, October 29. Q-ENERAL Graziani’s advance towards the highlands of southwestern Abyssinia seems to continue unopposed, telegraphs Sir Percival Phillips to the Daily Telegraph. His troops are pushing back the thin screen of Abyssinian cavalry and infantry whenever contact is established with the Italians’ forward line of tanks. Villages are hastily evacuated immediately they are bombed. General Graziani is preparing for an intensive thrust towards Addis Ababa immediately his other troops reach, the foothills beyond the Ogaden district. The second column has progressed a considerable distance up the Webbe Shibeli Valley, while the infantry has reached a point 10 miles west of Maridli and 60 miles north of Walwal.
, Observers in British Somaliland believe weeks may elapse before a serious engagement occurs, the Abyssinian tactics being to allow the invaders'to penetrate the hills before launching a mass counter-attack.
