TENNIS CLUB’S BALL

BIG EVENT AT RIVERLEA. The tennis ball at Riverlea on Friday night was a great success, visitors being present from all round the district. Hooker’s Orchestra supplied the music and Mr. M. O’Neil and Mr. S. Gordon played extras. The masters of ceremonies Messrs. John Hey and Mr. E. Dunstan. Mr. S. Gordon sang comic songs. A competition for a box of chocolates was won by Mr. J. Hey. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss' Mavis Hardacre and Mr. L. West and a spot waltz by Miss G. Rothe and Mr. Sexton.

Supper was served under the management of a committee comprising Mesdames Eves, Josephson, Chapman and Rothe, assisted by women members of the tennis club. .

The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery, flowers and streamers under the supervision of Misses L. and N. Josephson.

GENERAL ITEMS.

Improving Patea’s Domain.

Tire levelling and planting of an unsightly area adjoining the Patea croquet lawns in the domain has considerably improved the immediate environs of the oval and memorial gates. A programnie of continuous improvements is being effected and with the rich grass growth in evidence the domain is presenting a pleasing prospect that is attracting many visitors.

Sharks Spoil Fishing. Fishermen report that the proximity of sharks to the shore has spoiled fishing' from the sea walls at Patea for some time past. On a recent Sunday a shark estimated to be six feet long carried away a new, heavy line that had only just been cast and a smaller shark carried away a line a few days ago.

Patea Post Office Business. The increasing volume of business handled at the Patea post office has necessitated an increase of staff, and the recent appointment of Mr. H. N. J. Trustrum, clerical officer, Rangiora, has brought the number of permant officers now at Patea to eleven.

Railway Work Absorbs Unemployed. Twelve men formerly on relief work at Patea have been transferred to the Railway Department’s regrading and surfacing work near the Pariroa pa. The men commenced work yesterday. They will be employed six days a week at 12s a day.

Unemployed Men at Patea. Thirty-four unemployed men, of whom 14 are Maoris, are registered at, Patea, the total being reduced by 12 yesterday. Until yesterday the number was substantially the same as for the corresponding period of last year. Mr. Dickie at Te Roti.

There was a good attendance at the Te Roti hall on Monday night when Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P.,. National Government candidate for the Patea seat, expounded the Government’s policy. A number of questions were asked and were answered by Mr Dickie. Mr. M. Condon presided, and at the conclusion of the address Mr. Dickie was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence on tire motion of’ Mr. C. Stokes, seconded by Mr. W. Mortlock.
