H. G. WATSON MAKES FAST TIME

QTERNLY contested at a terrific pace throughout, with nearly ° a quarter of an hour cut off the previous record for the race, and with no fewer than 42 of the 61 starters completing the course, 11 of whom broke the record of 4h 22m 57s established by A. Ralston (Otago) in 1933, the 1935 Taranaki circular rokd race around Mount Egmont on Saturday was easily the most memorable of the series to date. That such a record should have been established in the face of the adverse conditions, heavy rain making the roads slippery for about two-thirds of the way, speaks volumes for the determination and condition of the cyclists, of whom 17 were juniors under 20 years of * C. H. Pittams, Midhirst, won by more than 100 yards, followed by P. L. Hansen, Waimate, who was a similar distance ahead’ of W. S. Chisholm, Auckland. The fight for the New Zealand championship honours was again very exciting. Three of the scratch men, H. G. Watson, Christchurch, H. Snowden, New Plymouth, and W. Lamberton, Christchurch, entered the course on terms for Watson to win in the sprint home by a wheel , from Snowden, with Lamberton a similar distance away. The - winner clipped 14m 19s off the record. It was Watson’s fifth championship success in the series. . The race carried with it the New Zealand junior 100-miles championship, which was won by, C. Mana, Waitara, who finished ninth off the 12-minute mark in the fast time of 4h 14m 455.
