FORMER MAYOR’S DEATH

PROMINENT IN PUBLIC LIFE. BIG ATTENDANCE AT FUNERAL. The death of Mr. J. A. Winfield, a former Mayor of Inglewood, occurred at New Plymouth on Saturday. Mr. Winfield was 69 years of age, and the illness which ended in his death had been of about two months duration. Mr. Winfield was born at Melton Mowbray, England, and when 20 years of age he went to Australia. He returned to England but later made the voyage to New Zealand and settled in Taranaki. He farmed on the Kent Road for several years and then started business as a cabinet-maker at Inglewood. Some years later he went into a grocery business which he conducted until his death. In 1897 he married Miss Marion Todd. Mr. Winfield was prominent in public affairs and was a member of the Inglewood Borough Council for many years. He was twice Mayor and was a member of the Taranaki Hospital Board for that time. He was prominent as a Freemason and was associated with several sporting bodies, notably the Inglewood Golf Club. ' J He is survived by Mrs. Winfield and four children, Mrs. L. Judd, Inglewood, and Messrs. Dennis Winfield (Turua), Cyril Winfield (Inglewood) and Brian Winfield (Fiji). The funeral took place at Inglewood yesterday afternoon and was well attended. Among those present were the chairmen and representatives of the Taranaki Hospital Board and Inglewood County Council, as well as representatives of the Inglewood Borough Council, with which bodies he had been identified. The Masonic Order and the Foresters’ Lodge were also strongly represented. Before the funeral a lodge of sorrow was held in the Moa Masonic room at which there was a large gathering of members of the Moa and Stratford lodges and visiting members. The bearers at the house and . the church were Messrs. H. Manby, T. Lindsay, R. B. Sutton, O. Paynter, E. Crossman and C. O’Carroll, representing old employees, the borough council, lodges and old friends. At the cemetery the bearers were Messrs. A. E. Surrey, A. Leech, G. H. Tayler, F. Hodges, C. J. Alleman and Dr. Faris, members of the Masonic order. The service at St. Andrew’s Church and at the graveside was read by the Rev. H. Boyd-Bell, vicar of Inglewood, the Masonic service being read by R.W. Bro. J. McAllister, Provincial Grand Master, assisted by Wor. Bro. L. G. Kohn, of Lodge Moa. The chief mourners were Mrs. J. W. Winfield, Messrs. Dennis and Cyril Winfield and Mr. and Mrs. L. Judd. Among the public and semi-public bodies that sent wreaths were the Inglewood Borough Council, Inglewood Chamber of Commerce, Inglewood Golf Club, Inglewood . Club, Moa Masonic Lodge, Inglewood Foresters’ Lodge, Master Grocers’ Association, the staff of J. W. Winfield, vicar and vestry of St. Andrew’s Church, Anglican Ladies’ Guild, directors Chain Store, Burgess, Fraser and Co. Ltd. and the directors and staff of Newton King Ltd.
