FUNERAL OF CARSON
BELFAST’S TRIBUTE TO LEADER. THOUSANDS MOURN ULSTER HERO. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Belfast, Oct. 26. Ten thousand shipyard workers stood bareheaded when the destroyer bearing Lord Carson’s remains docked. Business was suspended and traffic stopped. Half a million people witnessed the sad procession from the quay to the cathedral, where hundreds of wreaths were placed on special stands. Most moving was a bunch of violets held together by the famous Covenant badge issued to thousands who rallied to Lord Carson’s call of 1914. A card attached said:, “From a humble member of the Union Defence League to a great man.” The pall-bearers included the Prime Minister (Viscount Craigavon) and most members of Cabinet. A large and distinguished gathering attended the funeral service. The coffin was borne to a moss-lined grave in the south aisle of the cathedral. Tens of thousands filed past the grave throughout the afternoon, many bearing flowers.
