ELLERSLIE MEETING COMMENTS ON RACING * JONATHAN REAPPEARS HIS ELLERSLIE EFFORTS Tire reappearance of that good horse Jonathan at Ellerslie created considerable interest, and his two placings under big burdens demonstrated that he is still a force to be reckoned with. He looked bright and Well when he paraded for the Shorts on Saturday, though a little on the big side. He was not over lucky in the running »ut came with a grbat finishing burst to snatch second; money from British Columbia on the post. On the second day he was better placed when the field straightened out for the run to the judge but, though he made a gallant effort under his 10.3, the task of conceding over stone to Astarth and two stone to Star Artist proved too great aqd he had to be content With ti ird berth. ' , Though these two races should, Work an improvement in him, he is going to haVe ho easy task to Win sprint events under the Weights that he is certain to have in future. He look., sure to be 1 top-weighted for the Railway Handicap. Nevertheless he should prove capable of playing his part in the two weight-for-age events at the A.R.C. sUmiher carnival, the King’s Plate ahd the Clifford Plate. MOTHER SUPERIOR FAILS RACING CAREER OVER Mother Superior shoWed all her old pace in the Shorts Handicap on the first day at Ellerslie, but dropped out suddenly a furlong from home When ate-, puting the lead With British Columbia. On returning to the birdcage she was bleeding from one nostril. She was galloped on during the race and, thougl- she accepted for the second day, the scratching rm, was put through her name. It is probable that she will be given another trial,, but if the bleeding trouble reappears her future will be in the matron's pad "nek. By Chief Ruler from the Mateter ittare Dovelet, she shdUld prove a fine brood mare. DAUGHTER OF GOLD DAWN MANTLE’S TEAM ADDITION An interesting addition to W. Mantle’s stable at New Plymouth ir a two-year-eld filly by Lord Warden from Gold Dawn. She is a well grown youngster, though likely to requite time to develop. Gold Dawn, by Day Comet from Red Glow, was a full sister to Bright Glow. Though Pot in the same class as her sister, Gold Dawn was a useful sort, winning among other races the Prince Wales Handicap at Awapuni and the 'Paul Memorial at New Plymouth, ——■- ■ — . MUNGATOON’S WIN . SOLID LAST HALF-MILE On the strength of some good work at Te Aroha there was Support for Mungatcon in the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie and he had £137 10s invested on hi: chance. At r- stage did he ever flatter his admirers and was well, beaten. In view of this it was. not surprising to find only £43 ’on him in the King Edward Memorial on Saturday, respite this lack of support he ran a very different race and, running up to the leader just before the straight was reached, he was in command at the distance. Running m solidly he wane- er in langer of defeat. As the first half-mile was run in 525. and the s’ furlongs in Im. 16s. and the full distance in 2m. 6 2-55., it will be seen that it was ly run race, and aS Mungatoon was practically in the lead at he six furlongs and ran the l ist half-mile in 50 2-5 s few excuses can be made for the others. Mungatoon is undoubtedly horse of moods, but when caught in a galloping humour he is a decidedly useful sort. WELLINGTON ACCEPTORS FIELDS FOR SPRING MEETING.
