“REVEILLE” SEASON

ENTHUSIASTIC FINAL NIGHT. APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCE. The “1935 Reveille,'’ which concluded its season at the New Plymouth Opera house last night, will long remain a memory among those who witnessed it. -There was sheer merit of performance, many pleasing numbers all possessing something different, brilliant settings* and costuming with remarkable spectacular effects, light, colour, music and movement. The audience on the final night, though not as large as the merit of the entertainment and the worthiness of the cause demanded, certainly lacked nothing in enthusiasm. The performance, too, went with a swing from start to finish, number following number with almost dazzling rapidity. Every performer, from the tiniest tot to the most seasoned, entered into the spirit of the the joy of living. They well deserved the unstinted and spontaneous applause. The audience would have recalled every number but m such a lengthy programme encores were wisely ■ prohibited from the outset. “The Reveille,” though unfortunately it will not augment the Mayor’s relief fund to* any great extent, which demonstrated both that Mr. W. Lints has a wonderful capacity for teaching and gaining the confidence of the youthful performers and also that New’ Plymouth possesses no lack of talent. The scene after the close was a remarkable one as, with the whole company assembled on the stage, a seemingly unending array of tributes, both floral and toothsome, as well as occasionally savouring of the humorous, were passed up to the performers from admirers, no one apparently being forgotten. Three enthusiastic cheers were given for Mr. Lints, who -was accorded musical honours and at the call,' of Mr. Lints cheers were given for all those who had assisted to make the “Reveille” run so smoothly but had not come into thd limelight. Prior to the final number, Mr, E. R. C. Gilmour, Mayor of New Plymouth, expressed deep appreciation of the great amount of work that Mr. Lints had done in arranging the “Reveille” for the purpose of raising funds for the Mayor’s relief committee. While Mr. Lints and the speaker had been disappointed at the smallness of the houses, it was very gratifying to know that all who had attended had shown their appreciation of the performances. On behalf of the Mayor’s relief committee and the people of New Plymouth he expressed thanks to Mr. Lints for the great amount of work and time that he had put in. Mr. W. Lints, on behalf of the performers, thanked the audience for their expressions of appreciation. There had not been big houses. In fact the houses had been the smallest that he had played to in his 23 years’ experience. He did not know what the people of New Plymouth wanted. It" was evident that they did not want opera as the Operatic Society had been in recess for three or four years. It was absolutely certain that they did not want the class of entertainment just courage even if he doubted hisSHRL provided and he might admire, his courage even if he doubted his judgment, if he were to give them drama. However, he was not so greatly concerned with the financial side, but from the mere fact that the periormers had been perfectly satisfied with him, he felt more than satisfied
