BACKBLOCKS POWER

ELECTRIC LIGHTS WANTED. TUTUTAW A FARMERS’ INTEREST. Following the lead given in the Huiroa district, interest in securing electricity has been aroused in other districts in East Taranaki. At Tututawa the subject of reticulation with the Taranaki electric power system has been discussed very frequently among the farmers, and such has been the interest aroused, that a petition has now been sent by those interested in the matter to the Taranaki Electric Power Board. The petitioners ask for full information regarding the conditions they would be expected to fulfil to obtain the electricity supply. It is realised by most of the settlers of course, that 'here are several difficulties to be overcome. The population of Tututawa is rather scattered, so that the number of consumers per mile of line erected would be very small. In addition, it is considered that for a beginning at least probably only a small proportion would require electricity in the milking sheds. In spite of these obstacles however, many settlers are looking forward with confidence to a day in the near future when their candles and kerosene lamps will be superseded by electric light.
