MRS. COOK CHAMPION

HAWERA WOMEN’S GOLF SOUTH TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. FAIRFIELD TO MRS. A. J. BRENNAN. Mrs. E. F. Cook, Wanganui, won the championship at the South Taranaki women’s golf tournament, which concluded at Hawera yesterday. Mrs. W. G. Walkley, Hawera, who was runnerup, played good golf in the semi-final but bad driving lost her her chance in the final. The Fairfield handicap was won by Mrs. A. J. Brennan, Opunake, who had a close and even struggle with Miss M. Bright, Hawera, in the final. The semifinals in this event were also very even. Special trophies, which were presented by Miss Reilly, secretary, at the conclusion of the tournament were won as follows: — Consolation prize for the best gross score that failed to win any event: Mrs. Richardson. Best gross score: Miss O. Kay (78). Putting: First day, Mrs. Grace; second day, Mrs. Smith; third day, Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Walkley thanked the visitors for their attendance and made special mention of the valuable services of the green-keeper, the secretary, the tournament committee and the Press. She expressed thanks to the men of the club for the use of the links. On behalf of the visitors, Mrs. Cook thanked the committee for an enjoyable tournament. Mrs. Brown and Miss Death tied with Misses V. and M. Sangster in the Canadian foursome yesterday, and the first two players were adjudged the winners on the last nine holes. TE NGUTU BEATS HAWERA. SIX MATCHES TO THREE. Te Ngutu golfers, playing at Te Ngutu on Wednesday, defeated Hawera by six matches to three. Results were: H. Evetts and Good beat Ward and Simpson 4—3, Betts and Penny beat Adams and Hay-Mackenzie 3—2, J. Linn and Howell beat Dingle and Dalgetty 6—45, Todd and Stevenson lost to Stewart and Blair 3—2, Luxton and Graydon beat Robb and Harrop 2 up,. R. Green and B. Barclay beat Mortlock and Vinnicombe 3—l, Oldfield and A. E. Linn beat Sutton and Cullen 2—l, Withers and Foley lost to Strange and Zinsli 4—2, Green lost to Galloway and Gleeson The annual men v. women match will be played at, Te Ngutu to-morrow. ELTHAM CLUB EVENTS. ABBOTT FERNS CHANGE. A. Tiplady (7) and C. Forth (13) defeated the holders E. L. Abbott (2) and R. H. Free (10), one up in a challenge for the Abbott ferns at Eltham yesterday. I. Wylds beat J. Casey in the final for the intermediate championship at Eltham yesterday. Play was over 36 holes for a trophy given by Mr. H. R. Casey. After the recent. spell of fine weather the Eltham links have picked up well and yesterday both the greens and fairways were in perfect condition. The links should be in excellent order for the women’s tournament on September 21 and 22. Many visitors have played on the Eltham links this season and the green fees collected are a record for the club. MANGATOKI MATCHES. TAYLOR BUTTONS RETAINED. The first round of a medal handicap for Miss E. Belcher’s trophy was played on Wednesday at Mangatoki, the best scores being:—.Mrs. R. Lee 99—32 —67, Miss Eva Terry 111—34—77, Miss J. Hill 101— 23-78. Mrs. G. D. Macgregor has gained a handicap of 36. McGregor and C. Pease (holders) beat Anderson and E. Knuckey (challengers), 3 and 1, in a contest for the Taylor Buttons at Mangatoki. NGAMOTU WOMEN’S GOLF. RESULTS OF L.G.U. MATCH. Ideal conditions prevailed on the Ngamotu links for the women’s L.G.U. match and several good cards were returned, resulting in some handicap reductions. The best scores were:— Senior. The time for the completion of the first round of Mrs. Waddell's foursomes has been extended to September 12. The following reductions of handicaps have been announced: Mrs. Duff Tayloi--15 to 14, Miss Webster 24 to 19, Mrs. Johnston 28 to 24, Miss Cholmeley 28 to 24, Mrs. Rich 27 to 24, Mrs. Rowe 35 to 33. Mrs. Flyger 30 to 28. The women’s committee has arranged a series of morning matches for junior school girl members, to be played on either Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays. The first match took place yesterday and was won by Miss L. Stainton, 120-36-84.
