WOMEN GOLF PLAYERS

BRITISH TEAM COMING SUCCESS IN AUSTRALIA A deep impression has been made in Australia by the capabilities of the British women’s golf team, which will play in New Zealand next month. Their driving, long game and play generally has been of a standard equalled only by the best Australian male golfers and the Sydney Referee has some pithy comments to make. “These husky Britishers can slam the ball in a manner that makes the average male amateur's drive look teenyweeney,” says the Referee. “One does not say that most of our leading amateurs could not outdistance’them; they could—but only by about 30 yards. On the other hand, there are hundreds of men who couldn’t get within 30 yards—or maybe, 50 yards—of a real Pam Barton slam.

“Think this over: the hard-hitting Pamela, shooting from the men’s tees, reached the pin at the 14th at Kingston Heath (544 yards) in two resounding woods and a crisply-cracked No. 6 iron. Then at the seventh (494 yards) Mrs. Walker, who because of the effects of train sickness, played only nine holes, let loose two marvellous woods that left Tier with a simple chip which, in turn, left her a six-inch putt .for a ‘birdie’ 4.”
