FIRST CLASSIC EVENT

WANGANUI GUINEAS CONTEST PROSPECTS OF A SPLENDID FIELD INTERESTING RACE SHOULD RESULT (By “Hurry On.”) (JHIEF interest in the spring racing nearly always centres round the three-year-old classic events and for this reason the form displayed in the Wanganui Guineas next week will be closely watched.' Many of New Zealand’s most celebrated three-year-olds figure among the winners of this race, among them being Gloaming, Estland, Lady Medallist, Reputation, Affectation, Duo, Lysander, Highland, Razzle Dazzle and Croupier. The field this year promises to be a really good one and many of the limners aie likely to play a prominent part in the decision of the more important events later on.

After the payment of the forfeit last ■week the following still remain in this year’s event. WANGANUI GUINEAS. (A sweepstake of £5 for starters, with £2OO added; one mile). Alchemic (Mr. W. T. Bailey), b c by Lackham-Bechon. (Mr. Jas. Bull), b c by Nigger Minstrel-Tradewind. Bun Fight (Sir Chas. Clifford), b f by. Winning Hit-Scrimmage. Hororata (Sir Charles Clifford), b g by. Reedy), b c by , Hunting Song-Love Token. Hunting Screen (Mr. Alf. Symes), br c by Hunting Song-Painted Screen. Nearly all the named horses have been returned winners while one or two more displayed distinct promise last season as two-year-olds. Alchemic is well up to weight and besides displaying useful form last season he opened his three-year-old career in good style by winning the Waverley Hack at New Plymouth last week in an impressive manner. He finished full of running on that occasion and the mile journey of the Guineas should hold no terrors for him. Fairfax was a speedy two-year-old but her barrier manners were so bad that she was never a betting proposition. Unless she has shown decided improvement her chances cannot be regarded as bright. In Bunfight and .iororata, the South Island owner, Sir Charles Clifford, has a likely pair. Bunfight showed really good form at Ellerslie during the summer carnival and, though she trained

off subsequently, she gave the impression that she would be a good sort of three-year-old. Her stable mate Hororata improved steadily as the season progressed and, after winning on the first day at Trentham in March, ran quite a good race in the Challenge Stakes on the second.

Though shaded by Legatee during the autumn, Severe was a good filly last season, running splendid races in the best of company. As she has wintered well she is sure to have a following here.

Mr. T. H. Lowry has also a likely pair in Haut Monde and Plato. The former was thought likely to prove the best of his age at one stage but had to be put aside on account of soreness. He has been galloping well of late and his spell during the autumn may have proved all to his advantage. Plato did not come on to the scene until the late autumn when he displayed a wonderful turn of pace. In his first few races he failed to stay on bv as fie became more seasoned, he ran out six furlongs in good style. Bred as he is, he should stay on "this season. Lowenberg created a big impression in his few starts last season when both at Stratford and Wanganui he put in splendid finishing runs. Though he was beaten into .second place at New Plymouth by Alchemic, he lost none of fiis admirers on that occasion as the going was not in his favour.

Pakanui set off in great style last spring by winning his first two races but his subsequent form was disappointing. He has a great turn of pace but stops quickly. However, reports from Hawkes Bay credit him with having made considerable progress lately and there is plenty of staying blood on his dam’s side. ( Though Entail failed even to fill a place last , season, he was not over-raced and gave the impression that he was likely to turn out a high class three-year-old. He is reported to have wintered well, and high hopes are held out for him. Prevail showed promise last season but a better idea of her prospects will be able to be assessed after her race at Marton to-morrow.

Pomposity, Thane and Hunting Screen have shown some form but scarcely enough to be given a winning chance in this company. * Hilton Gorse, who showed some promise in the autumn, is bred the right way. The form displayed at Marton and the first day at Wanganui will probably throw a good deal of light on the prospects but at the present juncture those whose chances seem likely to make most appeal to the public are Lowenberg, Alchemic, Haut Monde and Hororata.
