LAND FOR AIRPORT

GOOD AREA NEAR CHRISTCHURCH. OFFER MADE TO CITY COUNCIL. Situated close to the Harewood golf links, an area of 500 acres of land has been offered'for sale to the' Christchurch City Council by the Waimakariri River Trust for conversion into a municipal airport. The purchase price is approximately £6 an acre. The land is part of reserves held by the trust, and, although a small portion of the area is leased for farming purposes, it is believed that these ■ contingencies witl not be an. obstacle to the purchase of the whole block. Thfe terms of the trust’s offer will be considered by the finance committee and a recommendation will probably be made to the meeting of the council next Monday. It is believed that the trust’s offer is almost ertain to be accepted, as the land available is stated to be more readily adaptable to the purposes of an airport than any other considered by the council within easy access to the city. ' The council has some alternative sites in mind, but has been anxious to secure the Harewood land because of its solid earth surface, its proximity to the city, and the comparative evenness of the whole area, which gives it an advantage over other sites that would require a large expenditure in surfacing and levelling.
