BARROW ARRIVES

E. G. LUKEY REACHES WELLINGTON. TRIP FROM AUCKLAND IN 31 DAYS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 4. The barrow tourists, Messrs. L. G. Lukey and G. H. Schofield completed their journey from Auckland this morning, arriving at Thorndon at 11.45 o’clock. They were met by crowds of cars and cyclists, and the route to a community singing gathering, where they made an appearance, was thronged by thousands of people. Mr. Schofield said that they had an enjoyable holiday and were sorry the trip was over. The hospitality received had been wonderful. Both-men look particularly well. They accomplished the self-imposed task in 31 days. The barrow-pusher’s parade through the streets was in aid of the Mayor's metropolitan relief funds. In the post office square Colonel A. Cowles, chairman of the Mayor’s Metropolitan Relief Committee, extended a welcome to the two men, congratulating them on their perforntance and readiness to assist in the relief of distress. He referred to Mr. Lukey as “the old horse,” and said that few were capable of such a daily average as Mr. Lukey had done on the trip. Replying, each man eulogised the part played by his mate throughout the underf gking. Messrs. Lukey and Schofield, on arrival at the community sing, were presented on the platform with their barrow, and a welcome was extended by Councillor Gaudin. The welcome was acknowledged by both men and the crowd sang “Old Faithful.” /
