MOCK PARLIAMENT HELD
HAWERA ST. JOHN’S INSTITUTE. A mock parliament was held at a gathering of the St. John’s Young People’s Institute at Hawera this week. The principal parts were taken as follows: Speaker, Mr. L. A. Taylor; Clerk of the -House, Mr. A. G. Tacßae; Government Leader, Mr. J. Mortlock; Opposition Leader, Mr. B. Watts. Bills introduced for second reading were:—Clean Newspaper Publication Restriction, Mr. R. Lloyd (Government); Cat Registration, Mr. Watts (Opposition); Forestry Protection, Mr. F. Sargent (Opposition); Silent Zone Motor Vehicles, Mr. Mortlock (Government); Female Equalisation, Miss V. Findlater (Independent). The first three Bills passed the reading. Miss K. Sargent, Wellington, was welcomed to the meeting.
In the debate at the next meeting on the proposition “Thay Poverty is a Better Schoolmaster Than Prosperity,” the following will take part:—Judge, Mr. G. Mather; chairman, Mr. R. Lloyd; affirmative, Messrs. F. Sargent (leader) and S. Brownes and Miss B. Campbell; negative, Messrs. Watts (leader), and J. Crawford and Miss J. Stevenson. Mr. Mather has been appointed to judge a prose-reading contest.
