ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD

CHARGES AGAINST HAWERA MAN. Charges of obtaining benzine by fraud were made against Preston Frederick Albert Stevens, farm labourer, Hawera, who appeared before Mr. A. Grant, J.P., at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday. A remand till September 6 .was granted on the application of Sergeant J. Henry, who said that a further charge of the same nature was pending. It was alleged that Stevens obtained benzine worth 4s 2d from F. E. Cooksley by saying that he would return in ten minutes to pay for it. This he had failed to 'do. It was also alleged that he obtained Hen-zing and repair work to the value of 6s 7d from Mortlock and Co. by representing that it was for Messrs. Barr Bros./Scott Road. Bail of £lO with one surety of £lO was allowed on Stevens’ own recognisance. DEATH OF MRS. J. THRUSH. The death has occurred of Mrs. J. Thrush, a former resident of the Okaiawa district, who was a patient in the New Plymouth Hospital for many weeks. Mrs. Thrush was well known for her useful life at Okaiawa and her good work in both church and Sunday school for a number of years. GENERAL ITEMS. Staff Dance. At the George and Doughty staff dance at Hawera on Tuesday a spot waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs. W. Canning and a Monte Carlo by Miss M. Leggett and Mr. G. Brown. Extras were played by Miss S. Guscott (New Plymouth) and Miss E. Kelsen, and dance music by Messrs. C. Davies, N. Mitchell, T. Pritchard, N. Hawkins and E. Headley. Supper was served by the Rewa management. Euchre Party at Normanby. The final of a series of euchre parties vzas held in St. Paul’s Anglican Hall, Normanby, on Tuesday night to raise funds for the football club. Mr. Greig was in charge of the games. The prizes were won by Mrs. Hurliman 1, Mrs. Corrigan 2; Mr. Greig 1, Mr. D. Corrigan 2 (after a play-off with Mr. D. Walden). The consolation prizes went to Mrs. G. Tippett and Mrs. R. Tippett, and Mr. R. Tippett and Mr. H. Coxhead (after a play-off with Mr. W. Frei). The points prizes for the series were won by: Mrs. Corrigan 1, Mrs. Duggan 2; Mr. R. Walden 1, Mr. G. Minhinnick 2. Supper was served by the women’s committee after which an impromptu dance was held to music supplied by Miss Walden. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertise particulars of majt sales for to-day at 11 a.m. of fruit, vegetables and hedge and shelter plants, and at 120 pm. poultry, Sutton’s Supreme and Arran Banner seed potatoes, porcelain wash-basin complete with taps, handy counter with 14 drawers, and at 2.30 p.m. complete boot repairer’s outfit, furniture, etc. On Friday at 11 a.m. the firm will sell drapery, furnishings and household furniture and personal effects 'at Arthur’s premises, Princes Street, Hawera, and on Saturday at 10 a.in. counters, shop fittings and a small amount of stock at P. T. Donnelly’s premises, High Street, Hawera. SHIRLEY TEMPLE AT HAWERA. “DAVID COPPERFIELD” COMING. Shirley Temple, the child actress, will appear in her first real starring production, “Little Miss Marker,” at the Hawera Opera House to-day and tonight and to-morrow afternoon and evening. Sam Hardy, Frank McGlynn sen., Adolphe Menjou, Dorothy Dell and Charles Bickford are also in the cast The story is of a blonde five-year-old who reveals the soft side of a group of very hard Broadway citizens. “DAVID COPPERFIELD” POSTPONED. Owing to the popularity of the picture “David Copperfield” at Auckland and Wellington, the seasons in those cities have been extended to three weeks. It will therefore not be possible for the picture to be screened at the Hawera Opera House on Saturday next as intended. It will be seen at Hawera later.
