STRUGGLE OCCURS DETECTIVE DRAWS PISTOL SENSATION AT PANMURE DIFFICULT ARREST MADE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Auckland, Last Night. * After a struggle during which a detective drew an automatic pistol and covered a man he had just arrested a second man was taken into custody near the home of a Chinese on a lonely road' at Panmure shortly after dark. Two men, one of them, handcuffed, were brought to the central police station by motor-car and lodged in the cells. The men, both of whom have Maori blood, will appear in the Police Court this morning. Each will be charged with being a rogue and vagabond in, that he was found armed with a sand bag with felonious intent. Detective-Sergeant McHugh and Detective Finlay in a police motor-car driven by a constable, were on duty in the vicinity of Panmure about 6.30 p.m. The car was stopped on a road leading toward the Tamaki River and two detectives proceeded on foot towards the home of a Chinese. As they approached a gate they saw two men whose business they inquired. There was no reply, but one of the men ( is alleged to have produced a sand bag from his overcoat pocket and to have attempted to use it on Detective-Sergeant McHugh. Closing with the man the detectivesergeant wrenched the Weapon from him while Detective Finlay devoted his attention to the second man, A brief but violent struggle ensued between Defec-tive-Sergeant McHugh and the first man. Detective Finlay drew his pistol and covered his man, who offered no resistance, while Detective-Sergeant McHugh made a difficult arrest. For a few moments the man put up a determined fight but he was thrown and over-powered. No time was lost in hand- / cuffing him. Two motor-cars were used for the trip to the central station. Detective-Ser-geant McHugh took his prisoner in a taxi cab that was in the vicinity while the police car conveyed Detective Finlay and the second man. Two stockings, partly filled with sand or gravel, were taken possession of by the detectives.
